Depleted Lakers fall to league-best Thunder for third straight loss

Considering who wasn’t available for the Lakers on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena, it wasn’t a surprise that they were blown out by the league-best Thunder for the second time in five days.

But their spirited start despite Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, LeBron James, Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes being available offered a glimmer of hope.

Luke Kennard was once again leading the Lakers’ offense has a playmaker.

Rookie forward Adou Thiero’s athleticism was popping.

And somehow, the Lakers found themselves tied with the defending champions at 42 apiece midway through the second quarter.

But that hope quickly evaporated, with the Thunder taking full control of the game.

The Lakers scored just 22 points over the next 24 minutes of playing time en route to a 123-87 blowout loss.

Their scoring total was their lowest in a game this season.

Rui Hachimura, one of four Lakers who were getting rotation minutes a week ago who was available on Tuesday, led the short-handed Lakers with 15 points.

Timme had 11 points. Kennard finished with 10 points and 9 assists, while Thiero had a career-high 10 points in the most playing time he’s had in an NBA game (21 minutes).

What it means

The Lakers are in the midst of their first three-game losing streak since Feb. 22-26.

They stayed at No. 4 in the Western Conference standings with a 50-29 record, now a game behind the Nuggets (51-28) with three games left in the regular season.

Turning point

It should’ve been much earlier in the game considering who wasn’t available for the Lakers.

But when Jake LaRavia missed a pair of free throws late in the second quarter, with the Lakers already trailing, 60-46, and Isaiah Joe made a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Thunder up by 17, it was clear if it wasn’t already that Tuesday wasn’t going to be the Lakers’ night.

MVP: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The reigning league MVP didn’t have any troubles against the depleted Lakers.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go with 8 assists in 28 minutes, sitting out of the fourth with the Thunder leading 93-62 going into the final quarter.

Stat of the game: 17

That’s how many free throws the Lakers missed, making an already difficult game even more challenging than it needed to be.

The Lakers’ 45.2% free-throw percentage on Tuesday was by far their worst mark for a game this season.

Their previous worst free-throw percentage accuracy was the 57.1% they shot from the charity stripe in the Jan. 9 home loss to the Bucks.

Up next

The Lakers will travel to San Francisco to play the Warriors on Thursday at Chase Center.

The matchup against the Warriors will be the first night of a back-to-back, with the Lakers hosting the Suns on Friday.

Laying out for the blueprint for Lakers’ success without Doncic, Reaves

The Lakers are down after the regular season-ending injuries to star guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

But they’re not out.

Already having clinched a playoff spot before Doncic (Grade 2 left hamstring strain) and Reaves (Grade 2 left oblique strain) suffered their regular season-ending injuries during last Thursday’s blowout road loss to the Thunder, the Lakers are guaranteed to play beyond Sunday’s regular season finale against the Jazz.

How much further they’ll play beyond the first four games of their first-round playoff series, and whether they’ll extend the season to give Doncic and Reaves enough time to return to the floor in the postseason, will depend on several factors.

The main one being whether they can find the right formulas and game plans to win during life without their star guards.

“We have to be diligent on the offensive end with our screening and still want to just have a paint-touch mentality,” coach JJ Redick said ahead of Sunday’s loss to the Mavericks. “Got to put guys in a position to do that, but our screening’s going to be a big part of that, our effort offense as well. We’ll play lineups that haven’t played together probably all season. Got to crash, got to run.”

The loss to the Mavericks, in which they scored 128 points but allowed the Mavericks to score 134 points in their first home win in over two months, showed there’s progress for the Lakers to make.

And with LeBron James missing Tuesday’s home game against the Thunder because of left foot injury management, in addition to Marcus Smart sitting out of the matchup for his eighth consecutive missed game because of a right ankle contusion, significant progress won’t be able to be made until Thursday’s road game against the Warriors at the earliest.

Here are the factors the Lakers need to hone in on to maximize the team without Doncic and Reaves

The possession battle

Doncic and Reaves combined to average 56.8 points, 13.8 assists and 6.3 made 3-pointers per game for the Lakers during the regular season.

There isn’t a player, or even a collection of a few players, who can replicate or replace the statistical production the team’s star duo produced on a nightly basis.

But what the Lakers can do is improve even more on the margins.

The Lakers have been one of the league’s better teams this season at winning the possession battle, but they can be even better.

Already one of the league’s best teams at getting to the free throw line, a strength of Doncic’s and Reaves’, and not allowing many offensive rebounds or opponent free throws, the biggest way they can give themselves more bites at apple is from better offensive rebounding.

This can be achieved by playing bigger lineups more often, which they did against the Mavericks when they used Maxi Kleber as the 4 alongside either Deandre Ayton or Jaxson Hayes.

They have an above-average offensive rebounding rate when Kleber and Hayes share the floor, and become an elite offensive rebounding team when Kleber and Ayton are on the court together.

Transition defense

Getting stops has been an up-and-down challenge for the Lakers.

And a depleted offense won’t make things easier defensively.

But the Lakers can help themselves by consistently getting back on defense with more urgency compared to how they did against the Mavericks.

Their 12 turnovers, a very low mark, weren’t the problem. But the 21 points they allowed off turnovers made it a game of catch up.

Slow down

The Lakers are going to need all of the easy points they can get.

But they also need to be strategic with how often they push the ball up the floor in transition offensively.

James is a one-man fastbreak, third in the league in transition points per game.

And they have multiple players besides James, including Hayes, Ayton, Jake LaRavia and Rui Hachimura, who thrive offensively when getting up and down the floor.

But without the proper ball-handlers to feed them, the Lakers need to be careful with how often they push.

Mistakes in transition not only would prevent them from having offensive rebounding opportunities, but will spread their defense thin.

Warship based out of San Diego will play critical role in recovery of Artemis II astronauts

A historic splashdown is just days away off San Diego — and the Navy is ready to be a part of the action.

The San Diego-based USS John P. Murtha will be front and center to recover NASA’s Artemis II astronauts after their spacecraft hits the Pacific later this week, Navy officials confirmed Monday.

Sailors aboard the amphibious transport dock have been drilling nonstop ahead of the high-stakes return, with the crew’s capsule expected to splash down just after 5 p.m. Friday.

In a statement, the Navy said the ship has “unique advantages” that will help with recovering the Orion capsule and gathering “critical data to help ensure it’s ready to recover the astronauts and capsule during future Artemis missions.”

The ship’s commanding officer, Capt. Erik Kenny, called the mission “a fitting tribute” to its namesake, Pennsylvania Congressman John P. Murtha.

“We are honored to carry on his legacy by supporting NASA and the Artemis II mission,” Kenny said.

A Navy helicopter squadron based out of Naval Air Station North Island will track the capsule as it streaks through Earth’s atmosphere, then pick up the four astronauts and deliver them to the ship for evaluation, the Navy said.

Navy divers will also plunge into the ocean to recover the Orion capsule and haul it onto the ship’s deck.

The dramatic return follows a history-making moment Monday, when the astronauts soared farther from Earth than any humans ever — breaking the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles set in 1970 during a lunar flyby, according to NASA.

California lawmakers consider $26M to fund transgender care to make up for Trump cuts

Advocacy groups are demanding California lawmakers cough up $26 million in funds for access to “gender-affirming care” despite concerns about a multi-billion dollar state budget deficit.

In a packed committee hearing Monday, statehouse Democrats explored further ways to fight off what they described as “a significant threat” to care access for transgender Californians from the Trump administration.

“Since the very beginning the Trump administration has meticulously, inhumanely attacked the LGBTQ communities, specifically the trans community,” said Sen. Caroline Menjivar. “We believe everyone deserves the right to be treated equally and fairly.”

“Since the very beginning the Trump administration has meticulously, inhumanely attacked the LGBTQ communities, specifically the trans community,” said Sen. Caroline Menjivar. AP

Trump has been targeting federal funding of services such as puberty blockers or surgery designed to help a person become a specific gender.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a declaration in December that such treatments are unsafe, which California sued over.

Last year, the state authorized $15 million to defray costs of providing coverage affected by the finalized rule. Now, California lawmakers want to do more to prepare for the pending funding cuts, such as propping up a state-based framework to pay for that coverage.

Lawmakers also considered using CalRx, a state initiative that produces lower-cost prescription drugs, to make any needed gender-affirming drugs.

One finalized federal rule already classifies “gender-affirming” procedures as non-essential health benefits.

The federal government also proposed rules to restrict access for youth through Medicare and Medicaid — health insurance offered through the government for older and low-income Americans. Hospitals and medical providers enrolled in those programs would be prohibited from offering gender transition services to youth, and those funds can’t be used to pay for such services.

“So-called gender-affirming care has inflicted lasting physical and psychological damage on vulnerable young people,” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.

LGBT advocacy organizations claim the federal efforts have dissuaded many doctors from offering transgender services and therefore put lives at risk. JM Jaffe, executive director of Lyon-Martin Community Health Services, said Trump’s funding cuts have had a real impact on staffing and prevented them from applying to federally sourced contracts.

“In a state budget of over $300 billion, our $26 million ask is a small investment to protect and stabilize access,” Sacramento Pride said on social media.

However, opponents of the state funding criticized lawmakers for excluding voices who are concerned about the effects of “gender-affirming” care.

“When millions in taxpayer dollars and irreversible medical decisions for children are on the line, lawmakers have a duty to hear all the evidence, not just one side,” Women Are Real, which advocates for women’s sex-based rights, said in a statement to The Post.

Assemblymember Joe Patterson, a Republican, said at the hearing he thinks California is going in the wrong direction on the issue.

“The realization that a lot of western society has abandoned transgender affirming care for children, California continues to go full steam ahead on it,” he said.

The deadline for lawmakers to pass a state budget is June 15.

The family of a mother of two and coffee shop owner from Oakland who disappeared shared an update about the missing woman’s status on Sunday.

“During this holiday weekend, Amy’s friends and supporters have continued their efforts to review hours of video footage, searching BART stations and surrounding streets, and distributing flyers throughout the East Bay,” said an Easter Sunday message from Amy Hillyard’s family. “We are also thankful for the local media who have helped keep Amy’s story visible and in the hearts and minds of the community.”

The family posted the message to a dedicated webpage for Hillyard, 52, who disappeared at around 2 p.m. on March 25. Nearly two weeks later, her whereabouts remain unknown.

Last week, her family asked residents in Cleveland Heights, Lake Merritt, the Lakeshore District and Crocker Highlands to check home surveillance systems for any signs of Hillyard.

“The search to bring Amy home continues, and we remain hopeful,” family friend Sarah Wachs told Fox News Digital last week. “We’ve had hundreds of people come together to look for Amy.”

Wachs told Fox News Digital Hillyard is dealing with a health condition that may leave her disoriented and in need of help, but declined to share further details to protect her privacy.

Lakers’ Luka Doncic seeking treatment in Europe with hopes of expediting return

DALLAS — Lakers star Luka Doncic will seek special medical treatment in Europe for his left hamstring strain with the hopes he’ll be able to return to the court quicker, his agency shared on Sunday night.

Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, who’s Doncic’s agent, first told ESPN the news after the Lakers’ 134-128 loss to the Mavericks, which was the Lakers’ first game since Doncic and fellow star guard Austin Reaves suffered their regular season-ending injuries during the team’s blowout loss to the Thunder on Thursday.

Doncic suffered the hamstring injury during the third quarter of the loss, with an MRI on Friday revealing a Grade 2 strain,  which typically comes with a recovery timeline of 3-6 weeks.

InStreetClothes, which is an NBA injury database run by certified athletic trainer Jeff Stotts, stated that the average time lost for the type of injury Doncic suffered is about 35 days.

The Lakers didn’t provide a timeline for Doncic’s expected return to the court.

Three weeks from when Doncic suffered the hamstring injury was April 23, which would be around Games 3 or 4 of the Lakers’ first-round playoff matchup.

A timeline closer to 35 days, let alone six weeks, would likely take Doncic out of the Lakers’ entire first-round playoff series, even if it lasted seven games.

“I just know that he’s gonna do everything he can to try to be back,” coach JJ Redick said. “I talked to him Friday, I talked to him again [on Saturday], I talked to him again [Sunday] morning. He’s going to go through all the necessary things to be back at some point, and it’s our job again to extend the season so both those guys can get back.”

Redick said internal medical data didn’t show any signs of overuse for Doncic or Reaves, who’s sidelined with a Grade 2 left oblique strain, before their injuries.

Both grabbed at their respective injured areas during the first quarter of Thursday’s game but played through the third quarter before Doncic left the matchup with his hamstring injury and Reaves was subbed out.

“As a coach, you go on the information you have,” Redick said.

“[Reaves] was medically cleared. When Austin came back, I asked directly, I thought he was hurt. [I was told], ‘No, he’s medically cleared.’ The group wanted to go for it in the second half. Talked about it at halftime. And I think for both those guys, the nature of playing heavy minutes, that’s certainly a part of any equation when you’re trying to manage workloads.

“We also rely on the tracking data, and we’re looking at that after every game. And there have been a few times this year where it’s gone away from the standard deviation of whatever their baseline is, and we make the proper adjustments. There was nothing leading into that game that would suggest either those guys were ‘running hot’ as we call it.”

Tori Spelling recovers from terrifying car crash that landed family in hospital as she speaks with paramedics in aftermath

Tori Spelling and her injured children were treated by paramedics after their SUV was rear-ended during a car crash in Temecula, California, last Thursday.

The 52-year-old Beverly Hills, 90210 alumna and seven children — four of whom were hers — took three separate ambulances to the hospital where they were treated for cuts, bruises, contusions and concussions, according to TMZ.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office made no arrests, and the collision remains under investigation, but the white sedan — which allegedly sped through a red light — sustained far more damage to its front end than Spelling’s car did on the back end.

The nepo baby of TV producer Aaron Spelling was said to have expertly ‘maneuvered the vehicle to minimize a more severe impact’ and ‘everyone is alright.’

The only ones seen in the footage captured by eyewitnesses were Spelling, her 13-year-old son Finn, her 19-year-old son Liam McDermott and his girlfriend Silvana de Luca.

Spelling also shares her 14-year-old daughter Hattie and nine-year-old son Beau with her second ex-husband, Dean McDermott, whom she was married to for 17 years before their split in 2023.

Spelling — who boasts 4.1 million social media followers — posted then deleted a Facebook throwback of herself with Alicia Silverstone on Sunday, which was filled with concerned comments about the crash.

Later on Sunday, sources told TMZ that Spelling, her children and everyone else involved in the scary crash had been released from the hospital by Thursday night.

They had allegedly suffered minimal injuries, including small lacerations and bruises, along with minor pain.

Sources added that Spelling was spending Easter with all of her children after their recovery from the car crash.

She reportedly enjoyed a relaxed Sunday in Temecula, where her family has been spending time during her children’s spring break from school

Last month, misSPELLING podcaster said she doesn’t want her five children to move out of her $12,000/month five-bedroom rental mansion in Calabasas when they turn 18, as she considers the idea ‘archaic.’

‘I want to bring it back like old school and other countries,’ Spelling told People on March 26.

Legendary samurai sword used for close quarter combat is stolen from California dojo

A California karate dojo is reeling after a rock-throwing vandal on a bicycle smashed through their window to snatch a priceless piece of Japanese history.

The brazen burglary went down around 3 a.m. last Saturday, at the Zen Martial Arts Center in East Sacramento. Surveillance footage from a neighboring business shows the two-wheeled thief scoping out the J Street studio before lobbing rocks through the front glass to create a makeshift entrance on March 28.

The perpetrator didn’t go for the cash register or the electronics — he had his eyes on the prize: a 17th-century wakizashi samurai sword that has been in the same family for over 400 years.

“It actually belonged to a student, a long-time student,” Mike Oliver, the dojo’s owner, told local outlets. “It was in their family for a long time and they allowed us to display it. In Japan, you can’t export a wakizashi anymore. It’s kind of a cultural heritage, so it’s a special thing.”

The blade — a shorter companion to the traditional katana — was more than just steel to the George family; it was a holy grail. The heirloom belonged to their ancestor, Chitoshi Yanaga, and the family had been waiting for the perfect moment to hand it down to their son: the day he earned his black belt. The sword is reportedly worth between $4,000 and $6,000.

The dojo has been a neighborhood staple since 2009.

Oliver and the George family are now pleading with local pawn shops, antique dealers, and the Sacramento community to keep their eyes peeled for the ancient artifact.

They have also teamed up with the Sacramento Valley Crimestoppers, offering up a $1,000 reward for anyone who can help track down the steel and the dishonorable thief who took it.

Dodgers place Mookie Betts on injured list, call up Hyeseong Kim

The Dodgers placed star shortstop Mookie Betts on the injured list Sunday with an oblique strain.

Second-year infielder Hyeseong Kim was called up from triple-A to replace him on the roster.

The roster move comes after Betts left Saturday’s game in the first inning, when he felt something in his back while running from first base to score on a Freddie Freeman double.

Betts went for an MRI later Saturday night, and was expected to miss at least the “next couple days,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Now, he will be sidelined for at least 10 days, representing the team’s first injury loss since the start of the regular season.

In Betts’ absence, Roberts said Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland would likely share time at shortstop. They had previously been platooning at second base, and figure to remain in the mix for playing time there, too.

However, with Kim now back on the roster, he could be in line for regular playing time at that spot.

Despite a strong start to his rookie season last year, Kim struggled down the stretch, was used only as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement in the playoffs, and then failed to make the Opening Day roster this spring amid a continued swing makeover.

The 27-year-old has started the season well down in triple-A, batting .346 (9-for-26) with a double, two RBIs and four walks. Importantly, his strikeout rate has been better too, punching out just seven times in his first 32 plate appearances.

That will be the goal for Kim now: Trying to work good at-bats, play up to his contact-first skillset and use his speed and defensive strengths to make positive contributions.

Just eight games into the season, the Dodgers will need it to navigate their first impact injury.

Olympic fans shocked by ‘insane’ hidden charge for LA28 tickets

Fans scrambling to secure LA28 tickets are getting a nasty surprise at checkout – with hundreds of dollars in fees suddenly tacked onto their orders.

The first drop of presale tickets for locals to attend the 2028 Summer Olympics dropped on Thursday and Angelenos couldn’t believe the final purchase price included a whopping 24% service fee.

Tickets to the highly-anticipated Games start at just $28 but can cost as much as $2,000 depending on the event or the package.

So tickets packages to see the prestigious track and field gold medal events cost from $2,350 to $8,250 for premium seats.

Lori Rovner of Manhattan Beach told the LAIst she was finally able to purchase tickets to the games after receiving several “access denied” messages.

Her total for 16 tickets was $2,604.63, with the tickets costing $2,100, with a service fee of $504.63

“It’s insane,” Rovner said. “I don’t understand what the service is.”

The first drop of presale tickets went out on Thurssday and immediately there was problems.

One user on Reddit’s Olympics thread shared a screenshot of their cart. They purchased ten tickets to five different events, for swimming, basketball and soccer. The total cost for all of it was more than $11,000.

But it was the service fee that really stood out, costing them $1,038.22.

People have slammed the high service fees, calling it out as a “money grab.”

Some called the high service fees a “money grab.”

“Almost 25% is outrageous. It’s all outside of my realm but I’m still shaking my head,” one person wrote.

Another added, “It also seems to be a percentage of the ticket price. Instead of just a flat service fee. Total money grab.”

“Are you F**King kidding me????? A 24% SERVICE FEE??? I hate this country so much sometimes,” a fourth added.

Reddit users blasted the service fees for tickets to see LA28 events.

One person shared what they said they paid to see the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024 along with the service fees compared to LA, showing LA28 was four-times higher.

“Comparing pricing of the LA tickets vs what I paid for Paris is shocking. Approx. 400% increase / 4x jump in cost. Additionally the service fee for LA is 25% vs Paris 1.5%. I assumed LA would be more expensive….but 400% more?”

They then listed the price difference they said they paid.

  • LA Athletics (Group B) $2,050 ticket ( including $510 service fee)
  • Paris Athletics (Group B) $550 ticket + $16 service fee

Still there were those who said the person who shared the thousand dollar plus screenshot of fees was paying for a premium package and that they had managed to get tickets for much less.

“For those who want to throw up at the prices, I got 18 tickets for 9 events and paid a little over $550. I went with all $28 tickets,” the person wrote. “I got women’s soccer, gymnastics, beach and regular volleyball, track and field, baseball and a few others.

“This guy went all out. I would never spend that amount.”

A former Reddit thread pointed out that TicketMaster service fees to see things like a concert has always been between 15-20% of whatever the ticket cost, putting the Olympic ticket’s fee just above that.

An LA28 spokesperson confirmed to The Post that “the service fee is based on the percentage of the ticket price you pay.”

“LA28’s ticket program is rooted in heavy analytics and extensive market demand research around entertainment and live sports in the U.S.,” a statement read.

“Tickets are comparable to – or well under in many cases – professional sporting and major entertainment events in the U.S.”

“Pricing is based on a variety of factors and heavily informed by what fans have told us, as well as venue capacity, type of session, seat location and historical demand.”
