Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has thrown his weight behind Mohammed Shami, urging selectors to bring the experienced pacer back into India’s national setup. Speaking at an event in Kolkata ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ clash with Lucknow Super Giants, Ganguly made a strong case for Shami’s return, stating that the veteran should be sharing the new ball with Jasprit Bumrah.Currently representing Lucknow Super Giants after a Rs 10 crore move from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami has made an immediate impact in IPL 2026 with standout performances.Against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 5, he delivered a remarkable spell of 2/9 in four overs, including 18 dot balls, dismissing dangerous openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head early in the innings. Earlier, against Delhi Capitals, he struck on the very first ball, removing KL Rahul for a golden duck and finishing with figures of 1/28.

Ganguly was particularly impressed with Shami’s spell against SRH, calling it “phenomenal” given the quality of opposition.“He should be bowling at the other end of Jasprit Bumrah, nowhere else. That’s how good he is. We all saw that spell the other night against Sunrisers Hyderabad four overs, nine runs against two of the best T20 players, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. That was phenomenal,” Ganguly said.Domestic Form and Fitness in FocusThe former India captain also highlighted Shami’s strong domestic performances, recalling his eight-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy semi-final for Bengal.“He had a strong Ranji Trophy season for Bengal. I still remember that semi-final, even though Bengal lost, he picked up eight wickets. He was instrumental in taking the team that far, I’m very happy he wants to keep playing in the Ranji Trophy. It’s tough for a fast bowler, but there’s nothing better than watching Mohammed Shami run in with the new ball,” he said. Despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL, Shami remains out of India’s setup under chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Ganguly, however, believes the pacer still has plenty to offer at the highest level.“He looks fit and sharp. After bowling consistently, you reach peak condition. I still believe he should play for India. Hopefully, his time will come again because he’s that good,” Ganguly added.

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s sudden ouster from Kolkata Knight Riders has been termed “unfortunate” by IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal. Mustafizur, who was bought for Rs 9.5 crore ahead of the 2026 season, was released following instructions from the BCCI, sparking backlash and wider controversy.

“I would only say it was unfortunate. Beyond that, I do not have much knowledge,” Dhumal said in an interview with Financial Times. The incident did not stay limited to the IPL, as it was followed by a series of developments that eventually saw Bangladesh being replaced by Scotland in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The episode also reignited discussions about how external factors sometimes influence cricket decisions, especially in high-profile tournaments like the IPL.Dhumal addressed such concerns, stating, “It is unfortunate, I would say, the way things unfold at times. I do not think the government has any interest or any role to play in running cricket day to day. The government is supportive of cricket at large.”KKR clarified that the move was not their own but carried out as per directives. In an official statement, the franchise said, “Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL as the regulator of IPL has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.”“The release has been carried out following due process and consultations… BCCI will allow Kolkata Knight Riders a replacement player in line with IPL regulations,” the statement added.Dhumal remained hopeful about the future, saying, “But, yes, sometimes events happen around us and decisions follow. I am sure good sense will prevail and that this will not be the case going forward.”

‘We are happy’: MCA president Ajinkya Naik reacts to missing out on BGT Test | Cricket News – The Times of India

Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is not perturbed about not being allotted a Test match during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year. On Thursday, the BCCI announced that Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad will host the high-profile five-Test series between India and Australia in January-February next year. The MCA will instead host the third ODI between India and Zimbabwe on January 9.“All day, everyone has been calling me about not getting a Test match. Truth be told, we are very happy with whatever the BCCI gives us. We will do a great job of hosting Zimbabwe for an ODI,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik said at a felicitation function organised by Khar Gymkhana to honour the MCA’s achievement of winning the BCCI’s ‘Best Association’ award for three successive years.Later, speaking to reporters at the event on Thursday, Naik reiterated that the MCA had taken the BCCI’s decision in good spirit. “All matches are important, whether it is a Ranji Trophy game, an international fixture, the IPL, or a club match. All matches are the same for us,” he said. When asked if he was disappointed with the distribution of matches in Mumbai, Naik said, “We are happy that cricket is happening in Mumbai, and we will continue to work for the betterment of the game. Whatever our parent association gives us, we ensure that we follow it. We strictly implement all the SOPs.”Asked whether the Wankhede Stadium was not allotted an India-Australia Test due to hosting as many as eight matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup, Naik said, “Whatever the BCCI instructs us, we make sure that we implement it.”When asked whether marquee Test series like India-Australia or India-England should be restricted to four or five major centres, similar to England and Australia, Naik said, “I can only speak on behalf of the MCA. Any decision we take is done through our Apex Council. If it concerns the BCCI, you will have to ask the BCCI. I cannot comment on that.”

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has joined the growing list of Indian players voicing concerns over the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League, stating that it “takes the skill out of the game.”Gill’s remarks come shortly after similar criticism from players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. During the IPL captains’ meeting held in Mumbai, a majority of team leaders, including Gill, reportedly pushed for a review of the rule, which was first introduced by the BCCI in 2023 and has since been extended until at least 2027.

Impact Player Rule: Game-changer or all-rounder killer?

Speaking a day after the meeting, Gill was clear in his stance against the regulation, which allows teams to introduce an extra batter or bowler at any point during a match.“Personally for me, I don’t think there should be an impact player. I think cricket in general is an 11 players’ game and on wickets where we play on the grounds that we play, adding an extra batsman is I think it takes the skill out of the game,” Gill said.He further explained that the traditional balance of the sport is being affected, especially in pressure situations where teams are expected to adapt with limited resources.“There’s a certain skill in the game that you need to have. When you have a certain amount of batters and if a couple of your batters get out, there’s an amount of skill that you need to have to still get the scoreboard moving and get your team to a good score.”Gill also argued that the rule is making matches more predictable and less competitive, particularly on batting-friendly surfaces.“With that one extra player, it’s making the game more one-dimensional and it’s taking a little bit of the skill out of the game. Chasing 180 on a challenging wicket or 160 on a challenging wicket is for me, it’s personally way more exciting than chasing 220 on a flat wicket,” he added.Despite the criticism from several players, the rule is set to remain in place for the foreseeable future, with any potential review expected only after the 2027 season.“It’s gonna be there till 2027. It’s something that we also spoke about in the captain’s meeting yesterday. I understand it makes the game a bit more entertaining, but let’s see. It’s there. It’s up to them what the BCCI is going to do, they’re gonna take their decision, but personally I don’t like it,” Gill said.

IPL team captains have been warned about fielder movement during catches and the officials of BCCI have shared an important update regarding impact player rule ahead of the 2026 season. Teams have been clearly instructed that a catch will only be considered valid if the fielder has complete control of both the ball and their body before any celebration begins. As per Clause 33.3 of the playing conditions, “The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his own movement. While this rule is not new, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) emphasized its importance during a captains’ meeting held on Wednesday. Officials presented several video clips, including examples from the recent T20 World Cup, where catches were deemed invalid due to lack of full control. The message was clear: this rule will now be strictly enforced. Former India pacer Javagal Srinath and elite umpire Nitin Menon addressed this segment during the 90-minute session.

Impact Player Rule to Stay

The meeting also confirmed that the Impact Player rule will remain in place for at least another season, with no immediate plans for review. Despite concerns raised by some players, the BCCI and IPL officials made it clear that the rule will continue until at least the 2027 season.Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel openly criticised the rule, stating: “I don’t like this rule, honestly, because I am an all-rounder. Earlier, you would pick an all-rounder for both batting and bowling. Because of this rule, teams now prefer specialists.”There is a growing belief within the cricketing community that the rule could hinder the development of all-rounders. However, officials indicated that any formal review of the rule will only be considered after the 2027 season.A franchise representative who attended the meeting confirmed: “It was discussed, and it was made clear to all of us that the Impact Player rule is here to stay for at least two more seasons.”

The captains of all IPL teams are set to meet with officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on March 25 to discuss a range of key issues, including the Impact Player rule and the code of conduct. However, the primary focus is expected to be on clarifications regarding the two-bouncer rule, bat checks, ball replacement, the use of saliva, and the retired-out provision. The IPL 2026 captains’ meeting will take place at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.According to a BCCI communique to the franchises on Tuesday, accessed by Cricbuzz, Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon – heads of the BCCI’s match referees and umpires’ panels, respectively – will address the captains. The meeting is scheduled from 4:30 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday (March 25).

What will be the agenda?

The BCCI has recently shared the playing conditions for the season with franchises, highlighting key changes to Rule 4.4 (change of ball in the second innings); 5.8.3 (bat checks); 18.5.1 and 18.5.2 (deliberate short runs); 19.5.2 (fielder grounded beyond the boundary); 28.7.6 (restriction on the placement of the fielder); and Appendix D-3.9 (combining umpire review with player review).A glance at the new season’s playing conditions, in possession of this website, does not reveal any obvious changes, but the rules around ball replacement have been elaborated in detail – something that was absent in last year’s playing conditions. Rule 4.4 in the latest playing conditions reads:Ball Replacement Rules in IPL MatchesIf, during play, the ball is lost, cannot be recovered, or is deemed unfit for use due to normal wear and tear, the umpires will replace it with another ball that has a similar level of wear. Once the replacement is made, the umpires will inform both the batter and the fielding captain.Ball Change Rule in the Second InningsIn evening matches, the team bowling second is allowed to request one ball change after the completion of the 10th over. The request must be made only by the bowling captain and it must be made at the end of an over (not during an over). This rule applies only once in the second innings, regardless of dew conditions, replacement ball will have similar wear and tear as the previous one.Additionally, the umpires retain the authority to change the ball at any time during the match at their discretion.

Key Scenarios Explained

Scenario 1: If the umpires replace the ball before the 10th over due to it being wet, damaged, lost, or out of shape, the fielding captain still retains the right to request a ball change after the 10th over. In this case, the umpires are required to approve the request.Scenario 2: If the captain requests a ball change after the 10th over (e.g., in the 11th over) due to wet conditions and the umpires replace it: Any further request for a ball change later in the innings will be subject to the umpires’ discretion, not mandatory.Scenario 3: If the captain requests a ball change during the 11th over due to damage or shape issues and the umpires agree: The team can still make their one mandatory request after the 10th over (e.g., due to dew later), and the umpires must approve it.There are also other items like team sheet, toss, broadcast media commitments and awards, about which there is no elaboration. The session will begin with an introduction by IPL COO Hemang Aming.

NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders have run into multiple problems ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The team first lost Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked the franchise to release him from the squad.KKR had bought Mustafizur for Rs 9.20 crore during the auction after a bidding battle with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. The team had hoped the experienced left-arm pacer would strengthen their bowling attack.

Roger Binny reflects on 1983 World Cup glory

However, the move sparked controversy amid political tensions, leading the BCCI to intervene.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board had asked KKR to release the player because of the sensitive situation surrounding the signing.

Injury concerns for Harshit Rana

KKR then suffered another setback with young Indian pacer Harshit Rana. His participation in IPL 2026 is uncertain after he appeared on crutches during the BCCI Naman Awards 2026 in Mumbai.Rana was supposed to receive the Best International Debut (Men’s) award but could not walk to the stage due to his injury, prompting Arun Dhumal to step down and present the award to him.The fast bowler later underwent knee surgery on February 9 and is expected to need two to three months for recovery, which raises doubts about whether he will be fit for the upcoming IPL season. His possible absence could weaken KKR’s pace attack, where he has played an important role in recent years.

Possible boost with Matheesha Pathirana

Despite the setbacks, there may be some positive news for KKR. Player agent Amila Kalugalage recently posted a “person fencing” emoji on X, which many believe hints at good news regarding Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.Matheesha Pathirana suffered an injury while playing for the Sri Lanka national cricket team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, forcing him to miss the remainder of the tournament and raising doubts about his availability for the Indian Premier League 2026. The pacer had taken two wickets in three matches with an economy of 6.05 before being sidelined. The post, however, confirms that he may’ve fully recovered and is fit to play, and he is expected to play a key role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ pace attack.KKR have also added Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a backup option. Even so, replacing Rana’s role, especially in the crucial death overs, could still be a challenge for the team as they prepare for the new season.
