Salt led the charge with a blistering 78 off 36 balls, while Kohli played the anchor role in the stand.

The partnership also became RCB’s second-highest opening stand against Mumbai Indians in IPL history, behind the 148-run effort by Kohli and Faf du Plessis in Bengaluru in 2023.During the knock, Kohli achieved another significant milestone, registering his 47th century partnership in T20 cricket – the most by any batter in the format. In doing so, he went past Babar Azam, who has 46, and moved ahead of other greats like Chris Gayle (46), David Warner (45) and Faf du Plessis (40).Kohli eventually departed for a well-made 50, dismissed by Hardik Pandya after providing the perfect platform.A pillar of RCB since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Kohli once again underlined his value at the top. The franchise, meanwhile, are the defending champions, having clinched the IPL 2025 title with a win over Punjab Kings in the final.

Pakistan cricket team has been hit by a fresh controversy after questions were raised over the fitness of senior players Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman during the T20 World Cup selection process.According to a PTI report, the issue came to light following post-tournament medical evaluations conducted by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical panel. Concerns were flagged by Dr Javed Mughal, a UK-based specialist in sports physiotherapy and medicine, who joined the board earlier this year as director of sports exercise and medicine.

The matter had already been alluded to by chief selector Aaqib Javed while announcing the ODI squad for the Bangladesh series, where both Babar and Fakhar were left out. He had confirmed that the board would review the circumstances surrounding their fitness clearance. The situation intensified when it emerged that both players were dealing with injury concerns even after the World Cup. Babar later withdrew from the National T20 Championship due to a hamstring problem, while Fakhar was also managing a similar issue.“When Babar was examined, his injury turned out to be more serious than initially diagnosed, while Fakhar has been struggling with the same problem for months now,” a source said. The report also stated that the national selectors were informed by the team management that both players had been cleared to play by team physiotherapist Cliffe Deacon. However, Deacon has previously faced criticism over allegedly approving players despite minor injuries, reportedly due to his close association with members of the squad. At present, Babar is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy under the PCB medical panel and is expected to regain fitness in time for the Pakistan Super League, where he is set to lead Peshawar Zalmi. The tournament is scheduled to begin on March 26.Fakhar, meanwhile, has already returned to action in the National T20 Cup and indicated on social media that although he was not fully fit during the Bangladesh ODI series, he is now in a position to take part in the ongoing competition.

NEW DELHI: Babar Azam has been dropped from Pakistan’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh, as the selectors begin reshaping the team with an eye on next year’s 50-over World Cup. The decision follows Pakistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka, where they failed to reach the semi-finals.

Babar endured a lean run in the T20 tournament, managing only 91 runs. Despite that dip in form, his ODI numbers remain impressive — 6,501 runs and 20 centuries in 140 matches — making his omission a significant call. Alongside him, opener Saim Ayub, all-rounders Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, and fast bowler Naseem Shah have also been left out of the 15-member squad. In a clear sign of transition, Pakistan have drafted in six uncapped players: Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan and Shamyl Hussain. The three ODIs will be played in Dhaka on March 11, 13 and 15, giving the newcomers a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during the T20 World Cup.Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will captain the side, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed, as the team enters what appears to be a rebuilding phase. With the next ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October next year, Pakistan seem focused on refreshing their squad and testing new combinations in the lead-up to the global event.

Sahibzada Farhan was the standout batter, scoring 63 off 45 balls with several boundaries. He added a 46-run partnership with Babar Azam, but England’s bowlers kept things under control. Babar Azam had another slow innings, making 25 off 24 balls before being bowled by Jamie Overton. Spinner Liam Dawson was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 24 runs, while Archer and Overton also took two wickets each. Fakhar Zaman added a quick 25 off 16 balls, and Shadab Khan stayed unbeaten on 23, helping Pakistan reach 164/9 by the end of their innings. ‘Don’t think PCB chief has given full freedom’: Mohsin Naqvi under fire amid Pakistan cricket tensions | Cricket News – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has questioned the leadership of Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi, saying a lack of clarity and freedom may be creating tension between Pakistan’s captain and coach. His comments came after a viral video showed Pakistan captain Salman Agha throwing a bottle in frustration while sitting near head coach Mike Hesson.

Jay Shah: Kapil Dev deserves more credit for 1983 World Cup triumph

Tiwary believes strong leadership is needed for any team to move forward and suggested the current setup may not be giving the coaching staff enough independence. “If any country wants to move ahead, then the leader should be firm in his or her decision-making. There should be clarity, and freedom should be given. I don’t think the PCB chief has given full freedom. Mike Hesson is the current head coach, and he is trying to take the team along,” he told Cricbuzz. He also felt the bottle-throwing incident reflected deeper issues in the dressing room. “In the last game, we saw things got a bit frustrated between Hesson and the captain, Salman Ali Agha. Babar Azam was not sent out. Agha threw the bottle. It just proves that trust isn’t there,” Tiwary added. However, Hesson has dismissed claims of any rift and explained the incident differently. He said Agha was simply upset after getting out, not angry with the coach. “I’ve actually got sent that video, and you guys have really got that wrong. I’ll talk you through what happened. I was going over to talk to Salman about getting (Mohammad) Nawaz to put the pads on as a left-hander, and Agha was upset that he just got out, so he threw the bottle into the ground,” Hesson explained. He further clarified that the discussion was about batting plans, not an argument. “(It had) nothing to do with the conversation we were having… So it was a really simple conversation… So, amazing what people can interpret sometimes,” he said.

Pakistan star batter Babar Azam has had a tough T20 World Cup so far, managing just 66 runs in four matches with a modest strike rate. Because of this, he has been moved down the batting order from his usual opening slot to the middle order, a move that has sparked debate.Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has backed Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson’s decision, saying it makes sense given how fast modern T20 cricket has become. He pointed out that strike rates in the powerplay have increased massively, and batters now need to score at a much quicker pace.

Why Pakistan don’t trust Babar Azam any more | T20 World Cup 2026

“Look, I think first of all, all great players evolve their careers at different points in their careers. So someone like Babar, we have known him as one of the world’s best players for a very, very long time. I think the game of T20 cricket has moved so fast forward and towards strike rates that he’s found himself a little bit behind in terms of strike rates,” Du Plessis said.He added, “Looking at him in the last couple of years and certainly in the power play, the game has moved too fast, too forward, to be at a 120 strike rate. Now you need to be 160-190-200 plus for you to maximise that first six overs.”Despite this, Du Plessis believes Babar is still very valuable, especially on slower pitches where strike rotation is important. “So I think if you’re someone like Mike Hesson, what he’s trying to do is he’s trying to find the best way to introduce him into the game and on spinning pitches in the middle, that’s where someone like him is worth his gold,” he said.He also noted, “When you come to flat wickets, those kinds of roles these days are not as important anymore… So I can imagine he almost looked at how I can maximise the best out of Babar Azam.”

Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistan captain, has taken a swipe at Shadab Khan following the all-rounder’s post-match comments, reminding him of the challenges of handling success. Afridi said that while former Pakistan players had struggled to defeat India in World Cups, Shadab’s team managed it in 2021.After Pakistan’s 102-run win over Namibia in Colombo in their Group A match of the 2026 T20 World Cup, the 27-year-old Shadab was asked about criticism from former stars like Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf. He reminded the media that he had been part of the side that beat India in the 2021 World Cup in Dubai.

Why Pakistan don’t trust Babar Azam any more | T20 World Cup 2026

Following Pakistan’s defeat to India earlier in the tournament on February 15, Afridi and Yousuf had suggested dropping Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab in favour of giving youngsters a chance. But under Salman Ali Agha’s leadership, Pakistan bounced back emphatically against Namibia, securing a Super 8s berth. In the Namibia game, Shadab shone with an unbeaten 35 and picked up three wickets, producing a near-perfect all-round performance. Yet his comments at the post-match press conference have sparked criticism among former players.Afridi responded, saying: “Shadab was absolutely right when he said that we didn’t beat India in the World Cups, but his side did. They got respect after that, but they couldn’t handle it. By the respect thing, I mean that after they defeated India, they could not handle the issues between them. Shadab should also know that when he was not able to perform for the team, we guys stood up for him on national television, saying he is the backbone of the team.“I know Shadab, he is a very good guy, he has always spoken to us respectfully. When people talked about us during our playing days, we always backed up our words with our actions on the field. Not against the smaller teams, we used to perform against the bigger teams,” Afridi added. The former captain urged Shadab to let his performance answer the critics during the upcoming Super 8s matches against New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka. “So Shadab beta, aap bhi performance kariye. Beta performances karo. We stood by you in your difficult times; you didn’t play domestic cricket, yet you still got into the national team. If you want to answer us, then do it by performing on the field. Perform and let the World Cup get over, we will get quiet after that,” Afridi said.Pakistan will kick off their Super 8s campaign on Saturday against New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign has reached a critical juncture. A win against Namibia in their final league fixture on Wednesday is non-negotiable if Salman Agha’s men are to keep their Super 8 hopes alive. Anything less, and their tournament ends prematurely. The pressure has mounted quickly. After bold claims that this was a stronger outfit than the one that faltered against India in the Asia Cup, Pakistan suffered a familiar 61-run defeat on Sunday. While their clashes with India in the 2022 and 2024 T20 World Cups were tight, they still fell short. Since the Asia Cup, India have now registered four comfortable wins on the trot, reinforcing Pakistan’s struggles in marquee encounters.

What will Team India do today in Ahmedabad? Practice timing, Playing XI, press conference and more

Scrutiny has intensified around senior players Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi. Shaheen failed to control the game in the PowerPlay or at the death, returning figures of 1 for 31 in two overs. Babar’s issues against spin continue to surface — his strike-rate against spin since returning to the T20I side stands at 101.70 — raising questions about balance and intent in the middle order.Selection dilemmas loom. Salman Mirza and Fakhar Zaman are in contention should the management opt for changes. Pakistan’s heavy reliance on spin — 13, 16 and 18 overs across three games — also reflects a side still searching for the right combination.Namibia, though eliminated, are not without motivation. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon as co-hosts, they are keen to gather momentum. For Pakistan, though, the equation is simple: win or go home.In the other fixture, India face the Netherlands in the night game. Having already secured qualification for the Super 8s with three wins from three matches, India will view this contest as an opportunity to fine-tune combinations and tick a few remaining boxes.Abhishek Sharma is yet to get going in this T20 World Cup, and the team management will be keen for their No. 1 batter to spend valuable time at the crease ahead of the knockout stage. Getting runs under his belt could prove crucial in the business end of the tournament. There could also be changes in the bowling department. Kuldeep Yadav might make way for Arshdeep Singh, who was included as an extra spinner against Pakistan. With qualification already secured, India may use this match to test their bench strength and settle on the most balanced XI for the Super 8s.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi launched a scathing attack on the senior core of the Pakistan national cricket team after their crushing 61-run defeat to India national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at R Premadasa Stadium.Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India dominated the Group A clash on Sunday, handing Pakistan a heavy blow and leaving them in a must-win situation against Namibia to have any chance of reaching the Super 8s.

T20 World Cup: India humiliate Pakistan again

Afridi, speaking on Samaa TV, did not hold back and urged the team management to make bold calls ahead of the crucial fixture. He called for the exclusion of senior players including Babar Azam, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, stating that they had been given ample opportunities over the years without delivering consistent results. Notably, Shaheen is married to Afridi’s daughter Ansha.“Drop Shaheen, drop Shadab, and drop Babar. Try fresh faces against Namibia and give the new players a chance to build confidence. They’ve been playing for a long time. Whenever we expect them to perform, they don’t. If these senior players aren’t giving us the performances we desire, then play the juniors who are sitting on the bench. What is the difference?”, Afridi said during a Live show.Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha admitted after the match that the spinners failed to deliver on a surface that offered assistance.“We were believing in our spinners, and they had an off day today. Execution was missing in some parts of the game. We were obviously going to always believe our spinners, because they’ve done really well in last six month. And with the batting I think we didn’t start well and in T20 games if we lose 3 or 4 wickets in powerplay, you are always chasing the game,” he said in the post-match presentation ceremony.Salman also criticised the batting unit for not adapting to the conditions.“I think, to be very honest, like in first inning it was a bit tacky. The ball was gripping as well. So, the execution was, I think, missing when it comes to bowling, but I think the pitch better played better in the second inning than first inning. But our bowlers like, we didn’t bowl according to the situation. And when it comes to batting, we didn’t apply ourselves and gave us a chance to go deep in the game,” he said.

NEW DELHI: Defending champions India sent a strong message to the cricketing world with a 61-run demolition of Pakistan in their high-stakes Group A clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, securing their spot in the Super Eights. “I think this is for India,” said captain Suryakumar Yadav after India’s big win.

Inside India vs Pakistan Drama: Who Blinked First? | T20 World Cup 2026 Explainer

“We played the same brand of cricket we wanted to play. Batting first was the better option on this wicket. Ishan thought something out of the box. After 0/1, someone had to take responsibility and the way he took it was amazing.”The defining moment came at the top as Ishan Kishan unleashed a breathtaking 77 off 40 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes, to put India firmly in control. Tilak Varma (25) and Suryakumar Yadav (32) added crucial support, ensuring India reached 175/7 despite a challenging surface. Shivam Dube’s quickfire 27 in the death overs pushed the total to a competitive 176.Pakistan’s reply never gained momentum. Hardik Pandya struck in the first over, dismissing Sahibzada Farhan for a four-ball duck. Jasprit Bumrah then tore through the top order, sending Saim Ayub and captain Salman Agha back to the pavilion inside two overs. Usman Khan offered resistance with a fluent 44, stitching minor partnerships with Babar Azam and Shadab Khan, but his stumping to Axar Patel ended any faint hopes of a comeback. The Indian bowlers were ruthless in unison. Kuldeep Yadav trapped Mohammad Nawaz, Tilak Varma removed Shadab Khan, and Varun Chakaravarthy added two late wickets. Pandya, after seeing a couple of catches go down off his bowling, ensured the finale by knocking back Usman Tariq’s middle stump. Pakistan’s innings folded for 114 in just 18 overs, their third-lowest T20 World Cup total.“It was great to see everyone contributing with the ball,” Surya said. “We’ll go back, have a good time together as a team and then think about the other games when we take the flight to Ahmedabad,” he said.
