Last month, Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions received an urgent request about a mother cat and her four kittens.

While inspecting a unit, an apartment complex manager came upon an unexpected sight. A mother cat and her four kittens had been left behind by the previous tenant, roaming inside the vacant apartment with no one to care for them.

He kept the family fed and safe while searching for a solution. About a week later, someone told him about Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions.

“As soon as he reached out, we took the family in right away,” Vanessa Porter, Executive Director of Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions, told Love Meow.

The devoted mother cat, Chai, had done everything she could to care for her kittens despite the circumstances. She seemed relieved to be found and to know her babies were finally safe. The kittens, Saffron, Chamomile, Earl Grey, and Kombucha, quickly settled into their foster home, curling up together and dozing off on a cozy blanket fort.

“By the time we were contacted, Chai was clearly ready to be done with motherhood.”

When the kittens were weaned and more independent, Chai began to relax and focus on her own needs. She spent her time lounging on her favorite perch and soaking up affection from people.

Now that the kittens were eating solid food on their own, Chai could officially retire from motherhood. She was spayed and placed up for adoption, and she didn’t have to wait long. Shortly after arriving at the adoption center, she charmed her way into the hearts of a loving family.

Meanwhile, the kittens zoomed around their foster home as if they owned the place, claiming every inch they touched, including Vanessa’s lap.

“From the very beginning, they were bright, social, and thriving. Their will to live is very strong; they fear nothing. They’re confident, curious, and full of personality.”

Whenever one kitten discovers a new perch or lookout spot, the others follow. Before long, they’re piled together in a cozy cuddle puddle. The four often move as a clowder, poking their heads out in perfect unison.

The kittens follow their foster mom everywhere like shadows, turning every room into their personal playground.

“They have every toy, tunnel, and climbing tree imaginable, and they go all out until they crash, then they all pile onto me for cuddles,” Vanessa said. “All four are incredibly sweet, gentle purring machines.”

“Serendipitously, the names we gave them at intake still match their personalities perfectly. Saffron (the only boy) is the most rambunctious and adventurous. Chamomile is a bit more reserved and prefers to let her big brother test things out first.”

“Earl Grey is probably the second bravest. She’s so strikingly beautiful that she always looks like she’s posing for the camera. Kombucha is the most independent and quietly observant.”

Lori White, a foster volunteer with Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership (ARPO), opened her home to a feline trio in need of a safe place to land. Among them was an exceptionally shy kitten named Venus.

Found outdoors in the cold, Venus clung to her siblings for comfort and was too scared to move. Later, she bolted into a recliner and refused to come out. Lori and her husband carefully retrieved her and placed her in a playpen filled with soft beds and blankets.

With all three finally settled, Lori made it her mission to help them learn that humans could be trusted.

Venus’s siblings, Serena and Andre, began exploring their surroundings, curious about all the new sights and smells. They were cautious around people at first , but hearty meals and a calm environment slowly chipped away at their fears.

Venus, the shyest of the trio, began mandatory cuddle sessions several times a day. Wrapped in a soft blanket, she sat on her foster mom’s lap, learning that gentle touch wasn’t something to fear. With each stroke, her airplane ears softened.

Though timid, Venus never showed an ounce of aggression. Watching her siblings seek out affection helped her realize that maybe she could do the same.

Over time, Venus’s body language changed. Her flattened ears lifted. Her wary eyes relaxed. She started lounging in her playpen instead of frantically searching for a hiding spot. Being picked up still frightened her, but she was moving in the right direction.

Daily cuddle sessions continued, along with a front-row seat to her siblings’ positive interactions with people, reassuring her more each day.

Lori later brought Venus upstairs, where she met the resident cats and dogs. After a quick tour of the bathroom, Venus approached Lori, who was working at the computer, and hopped onto her lap for affection.

She finally let her guard down and revealed her true self. “Being my office assistant was her favorite activity,” Lori shared.

Just two weeks after arriving, the once-fearful kitten now greeted her foster mom alongside her siblings, demanding dinner with a joyful kitty chorus. “This transformation makes me so happy. I’m so proud of how much they have improved.”

“Just like her champion namesake, Venus is a gentle star in the making. Once shy, she’s now a purring office assistant who loves lap time and making biscuits.”

With patience and plenty of love, the kittens were ready for their next chapter: finding their forever homes.

When Andre met a family at a meet-and-greet, it was love at first sight. He quickly warmed up to them, rubbing against them as if to say, You’ve been chosen. Just hours later, he left with his forever humans, a dream come true.

A kitten was much tinier than other cats her age, but she showed the spirit of a tiger. Months later, she truly transformed.

Last summer, a mother cat and her seven kittens were brought to Craven Pamlico Animal Services, in need of a second chance.

Michele, who manages the kitten foster program, quickly arranged a foster home for the family. They were all battling stomach issues. While the mother and five of the kittens began to heal, the two smallest babies struggled to grow.

At five weeks old, they were no bigger than typical two-week-old kittens. Realizing they needed specialized care, Michele stepped in to help.

The tiny tabby with white mittens survived, but sadly, her sister lost her fight despite Michele’s tireless efforts. The little survivor was named Bedhead, inspired by her perpetually wild, untamable fur. Though she was impossibly small, Bedhead showed a fierce will to live and a spirit far bigger than her body.

“Over the next week, she finally started eating canned food regularly,” Michele told Love Meow.

After several rounds of medication, Bedhead’s stomach issues began to resolve. With each passing day, she gained a bit more weight and strength. Just when it seemed she had finally turned a corner, another challenge emerged.

Bedhead developed ringworm, a skin infection that required weeks of medicated baths and oral medication. “She seemed to lose all of her fur overnight. Her fur was gone, but her bedhead never fell out.”

She responded well to treatment, and slowly, her fur grew back in a blend of new shades. With renewed energy, she found her voice, becoming more chatty and curious about the world around her.

“We went through six weeks of ringworm treatment. She was gaining weight and finally hitting milestones. It was then I knew she’d be okay.”

Even after fully recovering, Bedhead remained petite. She met other foster kittens who were half her age and twice her size. By early January, she filled out beautifully for her small frame.

The former runt of the litter blossomed into a proper teenage kitten, full of boisterous energy and wrapped in a soft, gleaming coat. Friendly with every cat she met, she carried herself with unmistakable confidence.

She befriended Glacier, another foster kitten, sharing toys and showing her the ropes. Though Bedhead was two months older, the two were nearly the same size.

By five months old, Bedhead had grown into a stunning young cat, with a bushy tail that never failed to draw admiration. When she was finally ready for adoption, Michele was determined to find her the family that would cherish and spoil her endlessly.

In late January, Emily visited the kitten nursery to meet a different cat, but Bedhead had other plans for her.

“You know how kittens choose their person. One look from Bedhead, and Emily was smitten,” Michele added. “I didn’t rush into finding her a family and waited for the right fit, and did that work out.”

Bedhead quickly settled into her new home, happily cradled in everyone’s arms and purring nonstop. “Her forever family loves her immensely. She has a kitty sister named Snow and human brothers who love to hold and snuggle her.”

After many years outside, a cat tried home life for the first time, found trust, and never looked back.

For years, a tabby cat roamed the streets, blending into the neighborhood and surviving on the kindness of a caring family.

They set up shelters on their porch for stray cats and provided food and fresh water. The tabby always kept his distance, never letting anyone get close. After enduring many harsh winters, his body grew weary, and the toll of the street life began to show.

When an animal rescuer noticed the exhausted cat, she decided to take a chance on him.

Little was known about his past, but he was visibly terrified of people, carrying the weight of experiences that had left their mark on him.

With the help of a humane trap, the rescuer was able to catch him and bring him to Chatons Orphelins Montreal, a volunteer-run rescue. He received medical care and was named Tigrou, French for Tigger. “Completely lost and scared by all the changes, he had no idea that his life was about to change for the better,” the rescue shared.

At the vet clinic, Tigrou retreated to a corner of his kennel with a sad look on his face. He was estimated to be around eight years old and had been living with a severely infected mouth. “Every meal must have been painful for him.”

After a much-needed dental procedure, Tigrou recovered beautifully. Though he was left with very few teeth, he was finally free from pain.

When Tigrou arrived at his foster home, he began learning how to live alongside humans for the first time. Terrified, he hid in corners or tucked himself under furniture.

His foster family gave him all the time and space he needed, allowing him to adjust at his own pace. Slowly, Tigrou started to warm up to them. “After years of wandering alone outside, everything was new to him. But with positive reinforcement, trust began to grow.”

Treats became the key that showed Tigrou human hands weren’t something to fear. Little by little, the distance between him and his people shrank, and eventually, he allowed touch. “We even catch him rolling onto his back and playing with catnip toys. He’s making progress every day and gradually coming out of his shell.”

“He’s had such a difficult life, but now he’s learning what it feels like to be cherished.”

As his fear faded, curiosity took its place. Tigrou began exploring his surroundings, inspecting rooms, and claiming cozy spots as his own.

He now strolls through the house with growing confidence. “When he thinks we’re not watching, he plays on his own with toys and curls up to nap by the window. He’s sweet and gentle. We’re starting to see his teddy-bear personality come through.”

With warm beds and hearty meals, Tigrou continues to blossom. While sudden movements can still startle him and he sometimes seeks out a hiding spot, he’s becoming more comfortable each day and has embraced his role as the house supervisor.

He enjoys watching birds and neighbors through the window, completely content with the comforts of indoor life.

Thanks to those who gave him a fresh start, Tigrou is truly thriving.

They took in two kittens and a cat thought to be their mother, only to discover the gentle protector was a male.

Last month, a concerned member of the public reached out to their local rescue, Best Friends Felines, after finding three struggling cats in their yard.

Two of them were around two months old, clinging to a much larger orange-and-white cat. Although the rescue was already at full capacity, they couldn’t turn the trio away and stepped in to help. The team quickly secured the two starving kittens along with the adult cat they had been told was their mom.

It didn’t take long for the team to realize that the “mother cat” was, in fact, a male.

Rescuers carefully combed the area to ensure no other cats or kittens had been left behind. After an extensive search, none were found. “Due to the state of the kittens, we suspect their mother cat has moved on,” the rescue shared.

The kittens, named Dobby and Gremlin, were underweight, dirty, and terrified of people, but they were finally safe.

The orange-and-white cat, named Linkle, was estimated to be around 18 months old. Gentle and sweet-natured, he didn’t mind the kittens clinging to him or hiding behind him for comfort. “Even though life hasn’t started off well for him, he has a huge heart and has shown great courage.”

From day one, Linkle stepped into the role of big brother, “snuggling up to the kittens, keeping them warm, and offering quiet comfort like a true little guardian.”

Linkle arrived with visible battle scars across his face, clear signs of a difficult life on the streets. Despite everything he’d been through, he made it his mission to protect the little ones. He was incredibly tolerant, allowing them to use him as a shield as they adjusted to their new world.

Gremlin, the smaller of the two, is a fluffy bundle with the most charming wispy ear tufts. He may be tiny, but what he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in personality. He loves tube treats and will race across the room to tackle his brother.

Linkle is growing more confident by the day, settling into indoor life and warming up to the idea that humans can be trusted. He’s discovered his reflection in the mirrors and developed a love for treats, but whenever his little brothers demand attention, he’s right there, ready to shower them with affection.

A cat left outside tried to get back indoors. Once a family welcomed him in, he was determined to win them over.

A concerned neighbor reported hearing him cry night after night and watching him attempt to climb a brick wall, trying to get inside. He eagerly accepted affection from strangers, making it clear that he didn’t belong outdoors.

Volunteers sprang into action, determined to change the fate of this abandoned cat. While rescue efforts were underway, the team put out an urgent call for a foster family who could offer him a safe, warm place to stay while he waited for a forever home.

One volunteer saw the post and responded immediately. “I knew I could make his life better, so I decided to foster.”

In less than ten hours, the cat, named Emmanuel, was brought to safety thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers. “Thousands of cats have been helped over the years, and Emmanuel is one of them,” the rescue said.

Once Emmanuel realized he was no longer outside, he stepped out of his carrier and went straight to his people, rubbing against them as if to say thank you. After months of pleading to be let back indoors, his wish had finally come true.

A tiny kitten found outside never gave up, with kind people helping him thrive and other cats showing him the way.

At just four weeks old, a kitten named Greyson was found outside, with no mother or siblings in sight. When Kris Kaiser, a foster volunteer with Pet Haven in MN, learned he needed a bottle feeder, she stepped in to help.

Greyson greeted Kris with loud, hungry cries, but when he did eat, he had a hard time swallowing the formula. “Since he was only able to eat a small amount at a time, I was giving him much more frequent meals,” Kris told Love Meow.

He had plenty to say and made sure his “opinions” were heard, especially when hunger struck.

By feeding him in a more upright position, Greyson was able to eat better. But it soon became clear that he was struggling to use the litter box. A vet visit revealed that he was constipated and dealing with a few additional challenges.

Despite everything, Greyson remained his happy self, snuggling into the tiny beds Kris made for him and wrestling with his plush toys.

After two weeks in foster care, Greyson had gained weight and grown noticeably fluffier. He spent his days purring, meowing for attention, and dreaming of a future where he could eat as much as he wanted. He tackled every obstacle head-on, determined to grow big and strong.

He then transitioned to a new foster home with Abby. As a veterinary technician, she was able to provide the specialized care he needed.

Following multiple treatments and X-rays, Abby and her team identified the cause of Greyson’s health issues. “We found that he has congenital megacolon,” Abby told Love Meow.

At first, his prognosis was uncertain, and there were serious concerns that he might not make it through the next week. But they continued to fight for Greyson, and he fought right alongside them, like a tiny warrior with a fierce will to live.

“We did multiple medication and food trials until we found something that worked for him. The first time we did recheck X-rays after starting his newest medication, I was optimistic that he would be okay. And he has been ever since.”

Throughout his recovery, Greyson was vocal and expressive, never holding back his opinions. “He is such a silly and sweet boy.”

To ensure Greyson received proper socialization, he was introduced to other foster cats in Abby’s care, including several who looked just like him. It wasn’t long before they were playing together and sharing blankets.

Surrounded by other cats, his vibrant personality truly blossomed. “He thrives on interaction and loves being part of the action.”

Greyson now races through the house with his feline pals, playing with endless enthusiasm. When it’s time to rest, he curls up beside them, leaning into their fur before drifting off to sleep. Growing up with other cats has taught him proper play, boundaries, and important social skills.

With a prescription diet and medication, Greyson’s condition is well-managed. He’s constantly on the move, exploring every corner of the house and launching himself at toys like a little dynamo. But the moment he’s picked up, he transforms into a purr machine.

They helped a kitten abandoned on the road, unable to walk, and later watched in awe as the cat got up and ran again.

On a day when storms were forecast, a surge of requests for help poured into Tails High, a volunteer-run rescue. Among them was one kitten whose face was impossible to forget.

A dilute calico had been found abandoned on the road. Her legs were injured, and she dragged herself across the pavement in search of safety. A Good Samaritan stopped and scooped her up to get her help. “As we rushed her to the ER, we noticed butterflies in the wildflowers along the highway,” Tails High shared.

“Delicate, tiny, and hopeful, fluttering by as if to say everything might be okay. And so, we named her Flutterby.”

Despite a severe eye infection and broken legs, Flutterby’s spirit remained unshaken. Her right back leg was splinted to allow it to heal, while her left back leg was believed to need amputation once she reached a safe weight.

But the strong-willed kitten seemed to have other plans.

With round-the-clock care and an abundance of love, Flutterby’s appetite returned with gusto, and her eyes cleared up. She blossomed into a total love bug, melting into her people and soaking up every ounce of affection.

“With a full belly, her meds onboard, and thunderstorms roaring outside, Flutterby purred, made biscuits, and leaned in for pets.”

After a few weeks in foster care, she was splint-free, and follow-up X-rays revealed encouraging signs of healing in both hind legs. “She has us in constant awe of her resilience. A cat was transferred from a shelter with her kittens in tow. Months later, she received the happiest ending she had always deserved.

A few months ago, a mother cat and her four kittens arrived at a shelter already stretched beyond its limits. With their future uncertain, they were in urgent need of rescue.

When Heidi Shoemaker, founder of Foster Kitten Mama, offered to take them in, a compassionate network of volunteers sprang into action. Together, they coordinated a relay-style transport spanning several states to bring the feline family to safety.

“They make their way with multiple people each driving a ‘leg’ and passing them off to the next driver,” Heidi shared.

When the family finally arrived, the mother cat, named Candy, was exhausted but relieved to have a cozy, quiet space for her kittens. She allowed Heidi to gently brush her fur, remove her old collar, and clean her kittens’ crusted eyes.

Candy settled onto a soft blanket while her babies climbed all over her. As Heidi spoke softly to her, she began to relax.

Curious and fearless, the kittens explored every corner of their playpen and even attempted a few daring escapes. “They are fast learners and are already using the litter box well after starting off going anywhere.”

With proper medication and attentive care, their eyes began to heal, and their stomach troubles subsided. Day by day, they grew bigger, healthier, and stronger.

All four kittens were long-haired beauties: two calicos, one sleek little “house panther,” and a tiny tabby with a white belly and matching mittens. Their mother, a striking black-and-white tuxedo, was surrounded by a delightful mix of colors and personalities.

With their eyes now bright and clear, their playful, adventurous spirits began to shine.

Candy adjusted beautifully to her foster home. She devoured every meal and patiently taught her kittens how to eat from a dish. She watched them play from the sidelines, always ready to offer a grooming session.

When the kittens were ready for adoption, Lolly (calico) and Snickers quickly found their dream home together. Just as it seemed Candy had secured hers as well, the adoption unexpectedly fell through. Undeterred, Heidi resumed the search, hopeful that the right family was still out there.

A few weeks later, the perfect match appeared, not just for Candy, but also for her two remaining kittens.

He was infested with fleas and ear mites and suffered from severe stomach issues.

Gaby had little appetite and needed constant encouragement at mealtime to ensure his tiny body received enough nourishment. When he made a mess, he was gently bathed to keep his coat clean and protect him from infection.

After two rounds of medication and devoted care, his appetite returned in full force. He began gaining weight, strength, and confidence.

Throughout his recovery, Gaby handled every car ride to the vet like a champ. He lounged in his carrier as if it were his personal cat mobile, calmly observing the world around him. He allowed the veterinary team to examine him without a fuss, as if he understood they were helping him.

Once he was nursed back to health, his coat became soft and gleaming, and his endearing personality began to shine.

Gaby is a little shy when meeting new people, but once he feels safe, he transforms into a total cuddle bug. “Once you earn his trust, he’ll seek attention and cuddles every day,” the rescue shared.

With the other cats in the house, Gaby wastes no time making friends. He finds comfort in their presence and follows them everywhere. “He loves other cats and tries to do everything they do. Being groomed by them is one of his favorite things.”

By watching the resident cats interact with people, Gaby has learned to enjoy human affection. Once his shyness fades, he wants to be adored by everyone in the house.

He hops onto the cat tree to demand attention and face snuggles from his foster mom. When the resident dog sneaks under the bed covers, Gaby pounces and digs through the blankets, turning it into a playful game.

“He’s curious about everything happening around him. He starts purring the moment he’s touched, and he loves climbing the cat tree to watch birds through the window. The hammock is his favorite place to nap.”
