Officials say one person was killed and another seriously injured after a fire at a single-family home in Sooke, B.C., early Monday morning.

Sooke RCMP said they responded to the blaze just after 5:20 a.m. PT, with the District of Sooke saying the fire was at a home in the Rhodonite Drive area.

The district said crews located two people inside the house, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP said the second person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

They also said that at this stage in their investigation “there is no indication of criminality.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family, friends, and loved ones of the person who lost their life in this tragic incident,” said RCMP Cpl. Brett Urano in a statement.

The district and police both said the fatal fire was a challenging situation for the Vancouver Island community, and said it would leave an impact on everyone involved.

They said fire investigators were on scene Monday to determine the exact cause of the fire.
