Rougemont man faces murder charge in stabbing death of his wife
A 41-year-old man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection with the stabbing death of his 40-year-old wife, Véronic Champagne, in her Rougemont apartment last month.
Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec arrested David Guertin, who faces charges of second-degree murder and arson.
On Jan. 18, emergency services responded to a call in an apartment building on de la Petite-Caroline Rd. in Rougemont. Champagne was found with serious injuries and
was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Guertin also suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. His condition prevented him from being interviewed in the weeks following the incident, the SQ said.
According to reports, a blood-covered Guertin put their child, dressed in her snowsuit, outside before starting a fire in the home. He was injured in the blaze. Friends and neighbours said Champagne suffered a long history of abuse from her partner.
The Gazette previously reported
that Champagne’s death was among five alleged femicides that took place in January 2026.
