Residents call for changes at ‘nightmare’ A-road junction in Cambridgeshire

Residents who use the junction regularly have said it is always “backed up” with traffic.

Cambridgeshire residents have called for changes to a ‘nightmare’ junction on a major A-road. Drivers who often use the A1307 junction at Galley Hill have said they have witnessed ‘horrendous’ incidents involving cars trying to get in and out of St Ives.

Colin O’Reilly, who lives in Needingworth and uses the junction most days, said it acts as the “main flow out of St Ives”. He said it has always been a ‘bottleneck’ with cars having to cross through oncoming traffic to get over to the junction.

He said: “The traffic ends up backing up that road so it’s already very busy there. Then you have a steady stream of cars coming from Cambridge over the flyover as well. You look at all the other junctions along there and they either have roundabouts or a slipway so you don’t have to cross oncoming traffic.”

Julia Young used to use the junction everyday when travelling to from work to reach her home in Hilton. She described the junction as a ‘nightmare’ where you have to “take your chances”.

She added: “I think the other weekend, there were at least two accidents. It just seems to be a constant thing because people are probably fed up of sitting there. I’d often sit there for a very long time before I had a gap. The traffic in the evening is awful. It’s a tricky junction.”

Mrs Young described seeing a crash at the junction. She said: “I sat there and saw someone whizzing around and then going into somebody else and causing them to spin. It’s horrendous witnessing an accident.

“I don’t know how many accidents have taken place there but there always seems to be debris on the road. There are always car parts around the junction so there must be quite a few happening.”

At the start of March, emergency services were called to the area after a two-vehicle crash at the junction. Firefighters had to release someone from their car and one person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mr O’Reilly believes there is around one incident a month at junction, which is either minor or more serious. He said: “I haven’t witnessed a crash there but I went past the junction within 10 minutes of when an accident happened.

“The fire brigade had been there and had to cut all the doors off a car to get people out. It’s not great to see that on a Saturday morning after coming back from the kids’ football.”

To improve the traffic in the area, Mrs Young believes a roundabout or clearer road markings might help cars to navigate the junction. Mr O’Reilly added: “The new A14 had millions spent on it and I think they could have spent a little bit more and finished it off a bit better for the local people. They whole layout needs changing.

“I run a landscaping company and we use that route every day to get to work and it’s always backing up. It’s obviously a problem and nobody seems to be addressing it.”

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: “Safety on our roads is a key priority, and we understand the concerns raised about the Galley Hill junction on the A1307. Our records show there have been four injury collisions in the area since 2024.

“We will continue to monitor this location as part of our ongoing work to review road safety across the county, however, there are currently no works planned at this junction. Parish councils, any groups, or organisations that represent the local community can apply to our Local Highways Improvement programme for funding.

“The schemes are community driven and give local people the opportunity to put forward proposals for highway improvements in their area. More information is available on our website.”
