The little Siamese was alone and scared. She once had a home, but then a massive storm came. The humans called it Katrina. The water rose, and she was forced to leave everything behind.

When the floodwaters receded, she could not find her home or her humans. She wandered the streets alone for months, searching for scraps of food and fighting off other cats to survive. During that time, she found herself carrying babies.

One day, humans left a box with food inside. She was hungry, so she stepped in. The door snapped shut. She was trapped.

They brought her to a shelter and gave her a new name: Snowflake. It wasn’t her real name, but she had food and a warm place to sleep. Just in time, too. Soon she gave birth to six kittens.

A few weeks later, people arrived with a large white van. Snowflake and her kittens were placed in cages alongside other shelter cats. They drove for a long time. The women in the van spoke softly to the kitties, telling them they were headed to new homes in Massachusetts.

When they arrived, Snowflake was kept in a special area while she nursed her babies. Eventually, the kittens were weaned and moved away from her. They were named Snowflake #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, and #6.

All but one of the kittens were adopted quickly. A kind family soon adopted Snowflake herself.

Snowflake #6 was still at the shelter the day I visited. Her pale blue eyes caught me immediately. I brought her home that day.

We named her Snowy, or sometimes Snowbear, in honor of her mother. She was born in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and moved to Massachusetts when she was just four weeks old.
