My brother and I moved to Ohio from California in 2009, and we brought my sweet Munchkin with us. Moving from an apartment into a house meant I could have more cats, which I looked forward to. A friend took us to the local cat shelter just so we would know where it was. At the time, the shelter was privately operated and housed more than 100 kitties.

One cat caught my attention immediately. He was very needy and followed me everywhere I went in the shelter. I thought he was beautiful, but I could not decide whether to bring him home.

We looked at other kitties, but I kept going back to the caramel-colored critter. One of the volunteers told me that the fluffy, long-haired kitty had been there for three years and that nobody wanted him. That was it for me.

I took Vee home and gave him the love he deserved, including plenty of pampering. Sadly, about two years later, Vee developed cancer. It took over so quickly that there was nothing I could do except let him go peacefully.

I buried Vee with no regrets. I found comfort in knowing that I made the world a better place for something as small and precious as a kitty.
