Rangers held to nine shots in loss to Senators

Already last in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers recorded only nine shots on goal in a 2-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

The nine shots tied a franchise record for fewest shots in a game, during a loss to the Detroit ed Wings in 1955.

It was also the fewest shots recorded by any team in the salary-cap era, since 2005-06. According to the NHL, the last team to be held to fewer than 10 shots in a game was the Washington Capitals, who had nine shots against the New Jersey Devils in December 2003.

The Rangers had only four shots through two periods on Monday, which also set a franchise record. It was the lowest total by any team through two periods this season.

The poor shooting performance came after the Rangers honoured Mika Zibanejad for skating in his 1,000th game. The veteran centre had three of New York’s nine shots in the game.
