Penguins, Evgeni Malkin to discuss future after season

Malkin has spent the entirety of his 20-year NHL career in the black and gold, and he’s helped the Penguins to the second seed in the Metropolitan Division this season as the club aims to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2021-22.

But as he enters the final months of a four-year, $24.4-million deal, Malkin hasn’t discussed a new deal yet and shared that it won’t happen until the season is finished.

“We talked a little bit with (agent JP Barry) a couple days ago, and he say, like, wait (until) end of season and then see what’s going on,” Malkin told reporters post-game after the Penguins fell to the Rangers on Saturday. “Like, no crazy news. I’m just waiting. And I think my agent tell me, like, we wait (until) end of season.”

As a pending free agent, Malkin has continued to produce at a rate he’s done over his illustrious career. This season at age 39, he’s logged 46 points in 43 games. Last year, 50 points, 67 the year before, and in 2022-23, 83 points in a full 82 games.

Over the course of his career, the three-time Stanley Cup Champion has totalled 527 goals and 865 assists in 1,255 games, while adding another 180 points (67 goals, 113 assists) in 170 post-season contests.

But on an aging Penguins squad with a handful of key pending UFAs, it may be the end of the road in Pittsburgh for the soon-to-be 40-year-old by the time free agency rolls around.

Regardless, Malkin isn’t focused on his contract and has his eyes set on what’s in front of him.

“I’m just playing. It’s not my job to talk to Kyle (Dubas) or somebody. I just play my game and just wait,” he said. “Sid (Crosby) has an injury, I want to help the team win, of course.”
