A number of schools across Prince Edward Island are closed or delayed Thursday, due to road conditions not improving fast enough after a messy mix of freezing rain overnight.

“We know even a little bit of light freezing rain causes some problems on the road. So just be very, very careful this morning,” said CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin.

Closures:

  • Schools in the Westisle, Three Oaks, Kensington, and Kinkora families are cancelled for the day.
  • Due to a power outage impacting Gulf Shore Consolidated and its community, the school dismissed at 9:45 a.m.

Delays:

  • All other schools in the English school system proceeded following a one-hour delay.
  • The French-language school board delayed the start of classes by two hours.
  • Holland College delayed the opening of all Summerside locations and the West Prince Campus until 10:30 a.m.
  • Island Montessori Academy centres in Stratford and Cornwall opened at 9 a.m.
