One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire Thursday afternoon in central Prince Edward Island.

A portion of Route 109, Scales Pond Road, remains closed near the intersection of Route 8 in Freetown, around 15 kilometres east of Summerside, according to a social media post by P.E.I. RCMP just before 2:30 p.m.

Rodney Hickey, chief of the Kensington Fire Department, told CBC News that the call came in at around 1:20 p.m.

He said the fire started in the garage and then spread to the home, which Hickey said was significantly damaged and barely standing.

The homeowner told CBC News they were not in the residence when the fire broke out.

Island EMS said it transported one person to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In addition to the Kensington department, firefighters from nearby Kinkora also fought the blaze.

Just before 4:30 p.m., Hickey said crews were still using a ladder truck to try to knock down the fire in the home’s attic.
