Elections P.E.I. will conduct the City of Charlottetown’s municipal election in 2026, after previously refusing to continue handling elections in the province’s capital.
The provincial election agency entered an agreement for a four-year electoral cycle, which covers full elections and any other by-elections that might occur, said an email statement sent on behalf of Tim Garrity, the chief electoral officer.
“Elections P.E.I. has agreed to run the elections for Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall and Three Rivers for the 2026 Municipal Elections,” the email said.
“After every full electoral event, we meet and discuss entering into a new agreement for the next 4 year cycle with each [chief administrative officer].”
The provincial agency will be dealing only with the CAO and other city staff as required, and will not deal with city councillors, the email said.
The relationship between the City of Charlottetown and Elections P.E.I. started to go sour in 2022, after city councillors complained about mail-in ballots and aimed other criticisms at the provincial agency.
City council voted unanimously during a regular council meeting in Dec. 2024 to ask the agency to run municipal elections once again.
