Pedestrian who collapsed in middle of road and was struck by SUV has died

A 71-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle on Saturday evening after collapsing in the middle of the road in Ahuntsic-Cartierville has died.
Police said several 911 calls were made at about 7:20 p.m. Saturday to report that a pedestrian had been hit by an SUV on Grenet St. near de Mésy St. The pedestrian, seen lying unconscious in the road, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died on Sunday.
Witnesses told police that the pedestrian had been crossing the street when he collapsed and fell to the ground, and was struck by an SUV heading north on Grenet St. The witnesses said the pedestrian had been jaywalking between two intersections.
The 59-year-old SUV driver, who was not injured, did not see the pedestrian until it was too late, police spokesperson Manuel Couture said on Sunday.
An investigation is underway, he said, and police investigators are meeting with witnesses and questioning them to better understand the circumstances of the incident. Should the investigation show that the driver was speeding or distracted, he could be fined or face criminal charges, Couture said.
