Three people were hurt and one was airlifted to a Halifax hospital with serious injuries after a crash Thursday morning on a busy highway in Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash on Grand Lake Road and three of them sustained considerable damage.

The highway was closed to traffic between the Mayflower Mall and Gardiner Road for several hours and Cape Breton Regional Police were advising drivers to find an alternative route.

The highway has since reopened to traffic.

Police say they do not yet know what caused the crash.
