Why did MiLaysia Fulwiley transfer from Dawn Staley’s South Carolina to Kim Mulkey’s LSU?

MiLaysia Fulwiley transferred from South Carolina to LSU last year in what was one of the more surprising offseason moves. Fulwiley played two seasons with the Gamecocks and won the national title with them in her freshman year.

Since South Carolina is recognized as one of the top programs in the country with Dawn Staley at the helm, many questioned Fulwiley’s decision to leave the Gamecocks and join Kim Mulkey’s Tigers.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s digital show “Around the W,” in September, MiLaysia Fulwiley explained that she left South Carolina for a different challenge.

“South Carolina is a great program, I’m from there, I’ve been there my whole life,” Fulwiley said. “I kind of just felt like I needed a new environment, a new fresh start. Everyone deserves a new fresh start.”

Fulwiley also hinted that she wanted to experience what a transfer felt like, since she might not be able feel that emotion in the WNBA.

“In the (WNBA) you can’t just say, ‘Oh, I want to leave,'” Fulwiley said. “I think it was more of me just wanting a different environment and seeing my goals and seeing where I want to be and how those things with align in my career and felt like that would be the best move.”

Fulwiley is averaging 13.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for the No. LSU Tigers this season.
