Who said what? Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and more react as Mohamed Salah announces Liverpool summer exit

Liverpool players like Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and former Reds right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold reacted to Mohamed Salah’s announcement that he’s leaving at the end of the season. The Egyptian had arrived at the club from AS Roma in the summer of 2017.

Salah, 33, is in the midst of a hugely underwhelming season by his staggering standards, striking just 10 times and nine assists in 34 games across competitions. A public bust-up with the club hierarchy about throwing him under the bus had plunged his future into doubt.

A patchup with manager Arne Slot meant that Salah was soon back in the team. With a year left on his current deal signed in April 2025, though, the Egyptian announced on Tuesday that he’s leaving this summer. In a video message on X, Salah posted:

“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. … I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion. It’s a history. It’s a spirit.

“I can’t explain it in words to anyone not part of this club. We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies, and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates, past and present.”

Reds players were quick to react to the development, with Ekitike posting:

“Thanks Abdul.”

Gravenberch replied:

“Legend.”

Dominik Szobozlai commented with a heart emoji to the X post.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister and former Reds right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold replied with emojis to Salah’s post on Instagram:

As per the BBC, Salah is set to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer. with the Egyptian currently on 255 goals across competitions in 435 games in nine seasons.

Liverpool confirmed the exit of star attacker Mohamed Salah with an official message on their website, marking the end of the stint of one of the best players in the club’s modern-day history.

Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has won every major title at Anfield except the UEFA Europa League, ending the club’s three-decade wait for a domestic league title in 2020 and adding another last year.

“Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season,” the Reds statement read. “The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

“Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.”

The statement also mentioned:

“With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah is firmly focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool and, therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”

Mohamed Salah has seven Premier League games to go in his Liverpool career and quarter-finals coming up in the FA Cup (against Manchester City) and the UEFA Champions League (against Paris Saint-Germain).
