“WHAT IS NO.29?” – Fans left confused over BTS ARIRANG’s 6th no vocal track
On March 20, BTS released their fifth studio album ARIRANG. However, one song, No. 29 as the sixth track, stands out apart from the rest of the record. The piece runs for just over a minute. Yet it avoids vocals and lyrics entirely. Instead, it presents the steady resonance of the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok. The title, therefore, links directly to South Korea’s National Treasure No. 29.
At first, the track may feel almost empty. Even so, that minimal approach serves a structural role. The earlier songs have a stronger, more intense sound, so this section slows the pace. In turn, it creates a clear shift without breaking continuity.
Another notable point is the absence of songwriting credits. Other BTS tracks include consistent contributions. Here, however, no names are listed. This is the reason why many fans have been left confused over it.
“NOW WHAT IS NO.29,” an X user commented.
Various fans echo a similar sentiment, questioning what exactly BTS’ track stands for.
While some listeners may connect the number to broader themes, the track itself does not present explicit meaning. Instead, it operates as a pause within the overall progression. Hence, No. 29 works as a brief reset!
BTS ARIRANG credits show member participation across fourteen tracks
ARIRANG reflects BTS’ journey since 2013, and in turn, carries traces of their growth, mindset, and shifting identity across fourteen tracks. According to BIGHIT MUSIC, each member played a role in shaping the creative direction. This allowed every song to carry a personal imprint while still fitting into a shared structure.
RM appears across almost the entire record in the credits, except for the interlude. At the same time, SUGA and j-hope contribute to multiple tracks such as Body to Body, Merry Go Round, and NORMAL. Meanwhile, Jimin takes part in they don’t know ’bout us and Into the Sun, while V is involved in 2.0 and also joins Into the Sun. Jungkook, too, worked on four tracks, including Hooligan.
The lead single, SWIM, focuses on moving forward despite uncertainty, with RM leading its writing. The production process extended to Los Angeles, where the group worked closely with a range of global producers and writers. Names such as Mike WiLL Made-It, Flume, El Guincho, JPEGMAFIA, Diplo, and Ryan Tedder contributed.
This release also comes after a six-year gap since Map of the Soul: 7 in 2020. Later that year, BE followed with similar results, while Proof in 2022 revisited earlier material alongside new additions.
