“They don’t really know what their identity is”: John Wall doesn’t mince words on Mark Pope possibly winning National Title at Kentucky

Former Kentucky standout guard John Wall cited a lack of identity as the Wildcats’ biggest challenge as Mark Pope’s team gets ready for postseason play. Wall joined Yahoo Sports Daily hosts Caroline Fenton and Jason Fitz to discuss the Wildcats’ postseason prospects.

Wall stated that the team faces a roster challenge, with some of the players out with injury. However, he argued that the biggest issue with the team is the lack of a playing style, which further affects its identity.

“They haven’t really been healthy with some of the guys they wanted, got in the portal. And that’s kind of hurting their team. I think, yeah, you can have a GM, but at the same time, it’s all about the fit. What style are you running? Like, does this style fit my style of play?”

Can Mark Pope win the national championship at Kentucky?

The five-time NBA All-Star noted that the Wildcats are serious about winning. But the only thing missing is having the right fit in terms of playing style. Nevertheless, Wall maintained that Mark Pope can lead the Wildcats to challenge for the national championship this postseason if he fixes the team’s identity.

“I think he can,” he continued. “… You look at UConn. They got guys, and some of their guys are not five-star guys. Some of those guys are three stars, four stars, or maybe two-star guys. Or just great role players, but the most important thing with all of this is just building the team chemistry. Figuring out what fits, what works, what is our style of play.

Are we going to be a gritty defensive team or a great offensive team that gets up and down the court, super fast, and get up a lot of shots? … Once you get the identity, you know what you are. And I think that’s the hard part for Kentucky, because their lineup changes so much, they don’t really know what they are.”

Mark Pope is in his second year at Kentucky, leading the team to the Sweet Sixteen in his first year in charge. He will be looking to surpass the milestone this year. The Wildcats are 19-10 overall and 10-6 in the SEC with only two games to wrap up the regular season.

The team will visit College Station for its next matchup with Texas A&M on Tuesday before hosting No. 7 Florida for the regular season finale.
