“They were hit by an airplane”: Megyn Kelly wonders how fire truck crew survived plane crash at LaGuardia Airport, Captain Steeeve explains

Conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly and former commercial pilot Captain Steeeve discussed the recent plane crash at LaGuardia Airport in a Monday episode of Kelly’s podcast. In the late hours of Sunday, an Air Canada plane collided with a fire engine on the runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. The two pilots lost their lives in the incident, leaving dozens of others injured.

In the podcast, Kelly reported the casualties and injuries. She mentioned that the impact was so hard that a flight attendant was thrown outside the plane while strapped to her seat. Megyn Kelly also played the clip of the LaGuardia Airport accident, showing how the fire truck rolled over after the impact.

As per media reports, the crew in the vehicle did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Kelly wondered how the people in the fire truck survived the crash.

“They’re somewhat injured, but it’s not life-threatening. I mean, how could they possibly have survived that? They were hit by an airplane, and the captain and the co-pilot of the airplane died, but the fire truck guys did not. I mean, does that make any sense to you?” she said.

Captain Steeeve attempted to describe the impact and explained to Megyn Kelly how the fire truck crew survived. Referring to the footage of the LaGuardia Airport crash, the captain argued that the airplane’s cockpit took the full force of the collision with the fire truck. He said that the impact happened on the backside of the truck. Steeve said that the crew was strapped inside the truck while it was rolling, which absorbed the shock of the impact.

The captain added that, on the contrary, the pilots of the airplane did not get enough space for shock absorption and hence died immediately.

Megyn Kelly and Captain Steeeve react to the LaGuardia Airport ATC recording

“Sometimes these things come down to simple human error…” @CaptainSteeeve on shocking plane crash killing both pilots after collision on landing with fire truck on the runway.

According to media reports, the fire truck was given permission to cross runway 4 as it was heading to deal with an emergency with another plane. Meanwhile, the Air Canada Flight 8646 also got clearance to land on runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport. However, seconds later, the air traffic controller requested the fire truck to stop. The recording of the incident surfaced hours after the accident.

Megyn Kelly reacted to the audio in which the LaGuardia Airport’s air traffic controller could be heard asking the truck to stop and also diverting the other plane immediately following the collision.

“I mean, you got to feel when you hear that for the air traffic controller. That’s got to be an air traffic controller’s worst nightmare,” Kelly said.

Captain Steeeve also shared his thoughts on ATC’s response to the accident. He commended how the controller kept his cool while witnessing a tragic incident.

“He’s got other airplanes coming behind… He’s got to get the other fire trucks out there to take, you know, look for people, passengers, and so forth, and assess the damage on the runway. All of that is kind of hard to do, especially when you’re watching something as shocking as that take place right in front of you,” Captain Steeeve commented.

In a recording, 18 minutes following the crash, the air traffic controller could be heard saying, “I messed up,” to another pilot on the ground radio frequency.

Later in the podcast, Captain Steve told Megyn Kelly that if there had not been water on the runway at LaGuardia Airport due to rain, the plane’s speed might have been lower and the impact less severe.
