“That will haunt him”, “From hero to villain” – Fans react to England star’s showing in 1-1 draw against Uruguay
Fans have shared their reactions to the performance of right-back Ben White in England’s 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Wembley. Arsenal man White made his first Three Lions appearance since March 2022 as they were held to a draw in their first of two friendlies.
England boss Thomas Tuchel extended a late invitation to the squad to White after Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarrel Quansah withdrew from the 35-man squad through injury. The 28-year-old was introduced into the game as part of a raft of changes in the 69th minute, replacing Fikayo Tomori at centre-back.
Thanks for the submission!
Ben White scored to give England the lead, silencing the boos from the home crowd who voiced their displeasure with him over his four-year international exile. The defender then went from hero to zero as he gave away a needless penalty in stoppage time, allowing Uruguay to score a late leveller.
White’s performance came under the microscope for many reasons, and fans took to X to share their thoughts on his display.
One fan pointed out that the defender would be haunted for a while by his error.
Another fan stated that the Englishman had gone from hero to villain following the late incident.
A fan made a point about how quickly things can change using the defender’s case as an example.
Another fan posted that White, whose goal spared his side’s blushes, was ironically responsible for ‘ruining it all’ for his side.
A fan detailed his ‘eventful’ return to action for the Three Lions.
Ben White left the England squad after their 3-0 group stage win over Wales at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and declared himself unavailable for the national team. Tuchel revealed after his appointment last year that he had spoken to the Arsenal man, and he has now made his return to the Three Lions.
Arsenal dealt blow in England draw against Uruguay
Arsenal have been dealt a blow after forward Noni Madueke was forced off after just 38 minutes in England’s friendly against Uruguay. The 24-year-old had been included in the starting XI for the Three Lions as they hosted the South American side at Wembley.
Madueke was on the receiving end of a slamming challenge from Rodrigo Aguirre, leaving the Englishman exercising his jaw as he left the pitch. His Arsenal teammate, Ben White, opened the scoring after applying a close range finish following a corner in the 81st minute.
White would go on to concede a penalty, as he struck Federico Vinas with a high foot inside the penalty box. Real Madrid man Federico Valverde stepped up to continue his fine recent goalscoring form with a confident penalty in the 94th minute.
