Tarik Skubal sets the tone for Tigers’ 2026 regular season after World Baseball Classic run
Despite being overwhelming favorites to win the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Tarik Skubal and Team USA eventually ended the tournament on a disappointing note, losing 3-2 to a spirited Team Venezuela in the final.
Though there was plenty of hype surrounding Skubal’s participation in the showpiece tournament, he ended up playing only a single game, Team USA’s clash against Great Britain in pool play.
In that game, Skubal did not enjoy the best of outings, much to fans’ surprise. He pitched three innings, giving up two hits and one earned run.

He then returned to the Detroit Tigers’ camp, in order to focus on the 2026 season with his team. However, his most recent spring training start, against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, also did not go to plan.
Skubal gave up six hits in four innings, allowing four runs, three of which were earned. Postgame, the ace expressed his dissatisfaction with his performance, describing himself as feeling “lethargic.”
On Friday, Skubal spoke to The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen, claiming he was fully focused on putting the disappointment of recent lacklustre spring training and WBC performances behind him, and go all-out to win a championship with the Tigers.
“The WBC stuff, it’s over,” Skubal said. “I’m ready to play baseball for the Detroit Tigers and try to win a World Series this year.”
Tigers Skipper Offers Insight Into Tarik Skubal’s Mindset Heading Into The 2026 Season
For pretty much the entirety of the offseason, Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal’s future has been the topic of near-endless discussion.
Featuring on February 3’s episode of “Tiger Territory,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch offered some insight into Tarik Skubal’s mentality heading into the new season, considering all the buzz that has surrounded him this winter.
“He’s separated business and baseball,” Hinch said (25:20). “The private side, we’ve got to keep the environment, the hunger, the preparation, and the work, we’ve got to keep pushing him. What he’s done on the field when he’s competing is second to none. So, for us, we focus entirely on that.
“I know this offseason for him has been as public as anybody’s offseason. There’s nothing he can do that doesn’t get talked about. All these trade comments, the arbitration, the contract, the free agent year, it could be a distraction if he allowed it. That’s just not how he’s wired.”
Having won back-to-back AL Cy Young awards in 2024 and 2025, Tarik Skubal will be looking to complete a historic three-peat in 2026.
