Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl delivers gutting injury update after travelling to Germany for treatment
Leon Draisaitl had been away from the Edmonton Oilers camp since Sunday. He travelled back home to Germany to seek expert advice about his injury. The German professional had a scary injury update for the team’s fanbase.
Draisaitl was in Munich to attend FC Bayern Munich’s game against Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. He told Sky Sports that it will be weeks before he can take the ice again.
“I hope so. That’s the plan, the reason I’m here right now,” Draisaitl said. “(The recovery) will definitely take a few weeks. That’s for sure. I hope we play long enough so I can help out again at some point.”
This is an indication that Draisaitl might not be ready by April 18, the scheduled start of the playoffs. Till the end of the regular season, the Oilers are set to play 12 more games. Draisaitl has already missed two games after the Oilers announced the severity of his injury on Tuesday.
Draisaitl suffered the injury during Sunday’s game against the Nashville Predators. The 30-year-old took a hit from Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt at 4:20 of the first period and left the ice. He returned to the ice for a couple of shifts in the later stages of the period but was absent for the rest of the game following the first intermission break.
