Miley Cyrus shuts down talks of a Hannah Montana reboot saying “Girl, I’m tired”
Miley Cyrus recently shut down talks of a Hannah Montana reboot when she appeared on the red carpet of the Disney show’s 20th anniversary special at the El Capitan Theatre on March 23, 2026. Cyrus enjoyed the best of both worlds as she juggled being ordinary high schooler Miley Stewart and teen superstar Hannah Montana in the Disney show between 2006 and 2011.
The singer and actress brings back her iconic character for the milestone anniversary, which will air on Disney+ and Hulu exactly 20 years after the show first premiered in 2006. The special will include a sit-down interview with Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper, never-before-seen footage, rebuilt sets, special performances from Cyrus, and interviews with other cast members.
Miley Cyrus caught up with Variety on the special’s red carpet premiere on March 23, 2026, where she swiftly shut down speculations of a reboot, saying:
“Girl, I’m already tired. This has already been a lot.”
Miley Cyrus first teased the Hannah Montana special in 2025
Hannah Montana kicked off Miley Cyrus’s career and put her name on the radar when she played a teenager (Miley Stewart) who lived a secret life as a pop star by donning a blonde wig in the Disney Channel original series. The show followed Stewart’s antics as she tried to balance her ordinary life and her pop star world, supported by her father, brother, and best friends, Lilly and Oliver.
The show ran for four seasons and became wildly successful at the time, even spawning a movie, Hannah Montana: The Movie, in 2009. Miley Cyrus, who went on to have a thriving career as a musician, hinted at something “special” to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary when she appeared on SiriusXM’s TikTok Radio in July 2025, saying:
“I want to design something really, really special for it because it really was the beginning of all of this that now sits here today. Without Hannah, there really wouldn’t be this kind of… this me. It’s so crazy to think, too, that I started as a character that I thought was going to be impossible to shed.”
She added:
“And now that’s something that when I walk into a space, it’s looked at as this sense of nostalgia or something that you have from your childhood, but I’ve now been as kind of integrated into everyone’s life as the character itself. So that’s exciting to get to celebrate that.”
She hinted at the special again during an interview with Variety in January 2026, saying that she and the team were “working hard” on the milestone. She refused to give more details about the special and instead pointed to her blonde hair and bangs, reminiscent of Hannah Montana‘s signature blonde wig.
During a recent cover interview with Variety on March 18, 2026, Miley Cyrus revealed that plans for a 20th anniversary special were not in the works when she first began teasing it last year. She further said that she decided to use her godmother Dolly Parton’s advice and promote it before it exists to get the wheels in motion, adding:
“I learned this terrible habit — but I actually think it was good advice — from Dolly. She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no. So I just started promoting a ‘Hannah Montana’ 20th-anniversary special that literally did not exist.”
The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on March 24, 2026.
