Matt Walsh asks for Trump to be impeached after POTUS suggests soccer should be called “football”

Conservative political commentator and podcaster Matt Walsh called for Donald Trump to be impeached after the president suggested that soccer should be called football during the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup draw. For the uninitiated, football is usually called soccer in the United States, while the term “football” is used to refer to gridiron football or American football in the country.
On December 5, 2025, Trump attended the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. During his speech at the event, held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the president suggested that the football should not be called soccer in the United States, adding that it “really doesn’t make sense when you think about it.”
“When you look at what has happened to football in the United States, which is soccer in the United States, we seem to never call it (football) because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that’s called football,” he said.
Trump continued:
“But when you think about it, shouldn’t it really be called … this is football, there’s no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL. It really doesn’t make sense when you think about it.”
Following this, Matt Walsh took to his X account to seemingly voice his displeasure at the president’s comments, suggesting that they impeach him.
“Okay fine impeach him.”
Trump was awarded the FIFA Peace Prize
In November 2025, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced the introduction of the FIFA Peace Prize, meant to honor an individual who has shown “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world.”
According to CNN, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the inaugural award to President Donald Trump ahead of the draw on December 5, 2025. Trump was awarded a medal, a certificate, and a trophy replicating multiple hands holding up a globe. The president called the FIFA Peace Prize “one of the great honours” of his life and took credit for solving several global conflicts, saying:
“This is truly one of the great honours of my life. Beyond awards, what matters most is that we saved millions and millions of lives. The Congo is an example. Over 10 million people were killed, and it was heading for another 10 million very quickly.”
He continued:
“The fact that we were able to step in and help stop that is something I’m very proud of. India–Pakistan as well, and so many different conflicts we were able to end, in some cases even before they truly started.”

The president also added that he had known Gianni Infantino for years. He praised the FIFA president for doing an “incredible job” and setting “new records” with ticket sales, adding that the “numbers are beyond anything anyone thought possible.”
For the uninitiated, Trump reportedly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year. In October 2025, the Nobel Committee awarded María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan pro-democracy activist, the Nobel Peace Prize, prompting the White House to criticize the committee for placing “politics over peace.”
In a statement on X, White House communications director Steven Cheung wrote that Trump had the “heart of a humanitarian” and will continue “making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives.”
The 2026 FIFA Cup will be held between June 11 and July 19, 2026, in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
