“Kristian Campbell is too big of a failure”; “Zero surprise” – Fans react as Red Sox option 2B to Triple-A ahead of regular season
The Red Sox have announced that prized prospect Kristian Campbell has been option to Triple-A Worcester to start the 2026 MLB season. Last April, Campbell’s contract was extended to eight more years worth $60 million. His superb start earned him the American League Rookie of the Month Award for the month.
However, his brilliant start was a flash in the pan as he batted .159 from April onwards. This merited a move back to Triple-A in June where Campbell has stayed since. Upon hearing the news, fans on social media shared their sentiments about Campbell’s continued demotion in the minors.

Campbell recorded 51 base hits, 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored for a -1.0 fWAR. He played 59 games in second base, seven in center field and two in left field for the Red Sox. His struggles have led people to express a vote of no confidence for his future prospects.
With the presence of Marcelo Mayer and Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the middle infield and Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida, Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu in the outfield, there is little to no room for Campbell to develop his game.
Marcelo Mayer named Red Sox second baseman to start 2026 season
Marcelo Mayer has officially been named as the Red Sox’ second baseman to begin the 2026 MLB campaign. Manager Alex Cora announced the move on Saturday before the team’s preseason game against the Braves. In a corresponding move, highly-touted prospect Kristian Campbell was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Mayer was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. Regarded by experts as a five-tool player, Mayer was the organization’s highest draft selection in 50 years.
He started out in the team’s Florida Complex League team and was able to progress to Triple-A in just over four seasons. The youngster tallied 46 home runs, 205 RBIs, 48 stolen bases and 220 runs scored while batting .273/.360/.466.
On May 24, he was called up to the main squad and appeared in 44 games for the Red Sox in the 2025 season. Mayer had four home runs and 10 RBIs in his sparing stint before incurring a wrist injury on July 25, effectively ending his first major league season.
While he will be deployed as the primary second baseman, Mayer also has the proficiency in playing shortstop and third base. Manager Alex Cora also noted that even though the youngster is the primary second baseman, he isn’t a lock on the position and could share time with the likes of Ceddanne Rafaela.
