“I’ve been the one who backed him” – Gary Cahill offers opinion on Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after ‘costly’ mistakes
Gary Cahill has weighed in on Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his costly mistakes in their 3-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday (March 21). The loss marked the Blues’ fourth consecutive defeat across competitions.
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s season began on a decent note, but his recent dip in form has become a major cause of concern. The Blues have conceded 12 times in their last four games across competitions, while also going 15 consecutive fixtures without maintaining a clean sheet. Sanchez delivered a poor performance vs Everton, including one major error leading to one of Beto’s shots to pass through his legs and finding the net.
Thanks for the submission!
In a conversation on Sky Sports, Gary Cahill weighed in on Robert Sanchez’s recent form for Chelsea after the loss against Everton. He said:
“Sanchez? I backed him; I’ve been the one who backed him. I think he’s got personality; he can play out from the back, and at times he’s a great shot stopper. I’m willing him to stop making these mistakes, and the mistakes are obviously costly at the moment. He’ll be disappointed, he knows, you know he’s a professional goalkeeper. He’ll know in these moments he has to do better.”
If Sanchez does not improve in form for the rest of the season, Chelsea will have to weigh their options to resolve the issue. The Blues’ second-choice keeper, Filip Jorgensen, is currently out due to a groin injury. They could also hunt the market for a better prospect this summer to replace Sanchez.
Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior backs Robert Sanchez despite crucial errors in 3-0 loss to Everton

In the post-match press conference, Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior backed Robert Sanchez despite a poor performance throughout the game. The Spaniard was nutmegged by Beto as he scored his second of the night against the Blues. He said (NBC Sports):
“It’s so difficult so quickly after a game to speak about an individual performance. Rob is a top goalkeeper and they have days like this. Pickford makes a great save. Now is not a time for talking. It’s a time for me and my staff to analyze. The players go away and when they come back we’ll have a few clear weeks to really work with the boys. It’s not a lack of effort, the lads are trying.”
While Sanchez had a poor performance, the backline also failed to deliver, with the likes of Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana having a bad game. The Blues will next face Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals (April 4), before clashing against Manchester City in the Premier League (April 12) after the international break.
