Ex-MLBer hints at surprise moves from $4.05B NL West franchise to boost playoff push ahead of Opening Day

One of the most successful teams in MLB history, the San Francisco Giants failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2025. Heading into the offseason, they were expected to be quite active in the market.

Things ultimately did not turn out that way, as the organization opted to employ a more measured approach.

However, with Opening Day only a week away, former MLB pitcher Mike Krukow thinks the Giants’ may still have a few moves in the works.

“You have a lot of talent in the minor leagues for the Giants,” Krukow said on Thursday. “There are people in the minor leagues that other teams want. So that’s an opportunity to get another player that can really help out your team, if you sense a little bit of a weakness. By this time in spring training, you know what you have. If you feel you can improve yourself, you’re going to start looking.”

“I would never be surprised at a deal. Now, the next week, or anytime after opening day. It’s just the way it’s going to be. When you’re a team that contends, and has a chance to get to the playoffs, you’re more likely to do that. That’s exactly what the Giants are, they’re a team that has a feeling that they’re going to be able to get to the playoffs this year.”

Valued at $4.05 billion, per Forbes, the San Francisco Giants are the fifth-most valuable franchise in MLB.

“They gotta be smart” – MLB insider backs Giants’ measured approach in the market

On Dec. 2’s episode of “Splash Hit Territory,” MLB insider Susan Slusser, who works for the San Francisco Chronicle, defended Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants’ more calculated way of acquiring new players for the team.

“I understand why people are upset, I understand why Giants fans look at this and go, ‘They’re not spending money.’ They have spent money,” Slusser said (Timestamp: 15:33) .”They’ve got five long-term deals. Ownership approved the Rafael Devers deal last year.

“This isn’t a team that is sitting on their wallet and not bringing it out. This is a team that has spent pretty strongly. They’re in a division with the Dodgers. You’re not going to outspend the Dodgers. So, they gotta be smart.”

Having last qualified for the postseason in 2021, Giants fans will be hoping to see their team get back to their best in 2026.
