Dick Vitale rips into college basketball’s ‘wackiness,’ calls out transfer culture & unfair firings of Hubert Davis and Bobby Hurley
Dick Vitale expressed discontent with the culture of player transfers in college basketball and the firing of top coaches like Hubert Davis and Bobby Hurley. The award-winning basketball analyst tweeted a passionate post on X on Tuesday, decrying the “bouncing around” of players and demanding stricter regulations around transfers.
He further stated that the resultant firing of coaches who don’t win enough for the pleasure of boosters and donors is “sickening.”
“No one can convince me that in developing young people to deal with the ups & downs in life that exist, that bouncing around to a different school every year is healthy,” Vitale wrote. “Love to see some of these transcripts. The wackiness is in full force – rules, contracts, buyouts are needed!
“Coaches fired for not winning enough & big enough in the eyes of boosters who donate cash is sickening,” the Basketball Hall of Famer continued. “No way people that give their hearts & souls to the game & are great for young people like (examples) Hubert Davis & Bob Hurley should be out of jobs.”
Revisiting the exits of Bobby Hurley and Hubert Davis from Arizona State and North Carolina
Both Bobby Hurley and Hubert Davis won’t be returning for another season at their previous jobs at Arizona State and North Carolina, respectively. The Sun Devils missed the NCAA Tournament after a 12th-place finish in the Big 12.
The program subsequently opted not to renew Hurley’s contract set to run out in June. The coach was then put on paid administrative leave to last through the remainder of his contract. Bobby Hurley took the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances in his 11-year tenure as coach, including two consecutive berths in 2018 and 2019.
However, his contract renewal hinged on leading the Sun Devils to another March Madness run. Arizona State has since hired Randy Bennett as Hurley’s replacement.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels crashed out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round after a disappointing loss to the VCU Rams. The loss led to an emotional outrage from the Tar Heels’ fan base, boosters, and donors. It was the program’s second straight first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament, and it happened in a truly heartbreaking fashion.
North Carolina led by 19 points in the second half before collapsing to an 82-78 overtime defeat, marking the biggest March Madness comeback since 2018. However the Tar Heels moved on from Hubert Davis, hiring Michael Malone as their new head coach.
