“CJ Stroud gets another coach fired”: NFL fans react as Texans release QB coach Jerrod Johnson
C.J. Stroud’s Houston Texans parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson after three seasons on DeMeco Ryans’ staff. The move came after a disappointing offensive finish and a rough playoff loss.

Johnson and Stroud first met at the Elite 11 camp when the quarterback was in high school. The coach was hired by Houston in 2023, and the team drafted CJ Stroud at No. 1.

C.J. Stroud’s struggle in the 2025 season
While the Houston Texans reached the divisional round in 2025, C.J. Stroud’s numbers dropped drastically in his third season as the team’s starting quarterback.
He recorded career low numbers of 273 of 423 completed passes for 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Texans (12-5) finished second in the AFC South. Stroud threw for 462 yards, two touchdowns and a league-high five interceptions in two playoff games.
He said after the playoff defeat that his extension isn’t in his control and that he did his best on the field over the last three years. Stroud added that he has a lot left in him, and he has already done more than many at this point in his career. He also made it clear that he wants to stay in Houston for as long as possible.
