Buccaneers great Lavonte David clears the air after Mike Evans faces heat for missing star LB’s retirement announcement

Mike Evans, who signed with the San Francisco 49ers on March 12, was among the first to react to Lavonte David’s retirement. He posted an emotional message on Instagram.

Although the wide receiver was not present during Tuesday’s announcement, he paid tribute to his former teammate.

“The ultimate captain, player and teammate. Appreciate all you’ve done OG. Happy retirement Champ,” Evans wrote.

David’s retirement marks the end of one of the most respected partnerships in recent Buccaneers history alongside Evans. The veteran wideout’s absence from the retirement presser raised questions, although his social media tribute may have put any concerns to rest.

The linebacker made it clear that his decision was not influenced by Evans’ departure.

“Even though me and Mike have a really right relationship, man, but obviously we’re two different people,” David said to reporters. “To be honest with you, Mike already knew I was gonna make this decision before anybody, honestly, before his situation was even going on, so that’s just how tight Mike and I are.”

David played 14 NFL seasons, all with the Bucs, finishing as one of the most decorated defenders in franchise history. He recorded 1,714 career tackles and holds team records in tackles for loss (177), forced fumbles (33) and fumble recoveries (20).

A 12-time team captain and 2021 Super Bowl champion, David remained productive through his final season. He recorded 114 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles in 2025, strengthening his Hall of Fame résumé.
