2-time champion explains why he hates Will Ospreay: “It feels a little too convenient.”
A rising star hates Will Ospreay. He has explained the reason behind his hatred for the Aerial Assassin.
Callum Newman is a name that is making huge waves in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Ever since he joined United Empire in 2023, Callum has been a rising star for the Japanese promotion. Newman is also the protege of Will Ospreay. Over the years, Callum has been doing well for himself as part of United Empire, where he won the IWGP Tag Team Titles twice. He also won the New Japan Cup this year. At New Year Dash!!, Callum Newman was confronted by Ospreay who stated that he would return to NJPW after his neck issues and help lead the United Empire. Newman teased attacking his mentor, but was stopped by Henare and Great O-Khan. However, it looks like these issues between Newman and Ospreay are far from over.
During an interview with NJPW, Callum Newman said that when he started in the Japanese promotion, he was carrying Ospreay’s bags, but now he can be who he wants to be.
“People would see me as Ospreay’s little brother, like a cosplayer. I’m a lot more comfortable in myself now. Before, I was concerned with being a good boy. When I started in New Japan… I was carrying Will Ospreay’s bags and doing United Empire’s laundry. Now I can be who I am and wrestle how I want.”
Newman even acknowledged that the AEW star always supported him, but he left him in a country and told him to do his best. He further added that the Aerial Assassin only made his return to support United Empire when they became one of the top groups again.
“Will has always supported me since I first met him at 15. But he left me in a country I didn’t know and told me to just do my best. So it feels he did things a little half arsed, like he didn’t mean it completely. He only really came back and started supporting United Empire again when I took over and started doing things my way. When we started to build momentum and became one of the top groups again, that’s when he decided to come back. It feels a little too convenient.” [H/T Drainmaker on X]
Will Ospreay will face Jon Moxley at AEW Dynasty 2026
At Forbidden Door 2026, the Death Riders ambushed Will Ospreay after the Lights Out Steel Cage Match. Following this, it was revealed that the Aerial Assassin would be taking time off TV due to neck issues.
While Ospreay was sidelined, he underwent neck surgery before making his return at Revolution 2026, where he attacked the Death Riders. Now, Ospreay is set to compete against Jon Moxley at AEW Dynasty 2026.
It remains to be seen if Ospreay will be able to win his first PPV match after his return.
