N.W.T. RCMP say they have charged two youth in the territory after they used artificial intelligence to make child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

In a news release Thursday, police said they received a report last month that two youth used AI to alter social media photos of other young people to make them appear nude. The two then shared the photos with each other.

RCMP arrested the two young people and seized their electronic devices. They both face charges including making, transmitting and possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Child sexual abuse and exploitation material includes visuals that depict nudity for a sexual purpose or describes sexual activity involving a person under the age of 18, the release said.

RCMP said AI-generated images, even those that do not depict a real person, are still subject to the law.

After appearing before a Justice of the Peace, the youth were released with conditions and will appear in court at a later date.

RCMP said the investigation is ongoing.
