These cat hats of mine all have something in common — they used to be hair clips for humans!

And I have a new one! My human tracked down the company that made Party City’s hair clips and got me this St. Patrick’s themed one. We’re going to show you how my human turns these clips into cat hats.

The first thing she does is remove the clip. She usually winds up using a combination of scissors, a razor blade, and a little bit of force. But carefully, since she doesn’t want to tear the base.

Then she has to figure out where the holes for the elastic go. It depends on the size of the hat. She wants it to sit on my head without making my ears go completely flat. The smaller the hat, the closer to the widest part of the circle. This hat is a little large, so she positioned the holes just a little bit to the front. She pokes the hole with a big needle, then widens it with pointy scissors or an awl.

For the cord adjuster, she uses a small spring stop cord lock. She has a bunch she got from Amazon a long time ago, but you can probably find them at craft stores too.

Since we have so many hats now, she gauges how long the elastic cord should be with another similar hat. She doesn’t have to measure my head. She inserts the elastic with the help of a bent twist tie.

Once she has tightly knotted the cord and trimmed the ends, she puts the hat on me, and adjusts how tight the cord is.
