Mission RCMP say a large fire forced the evacuation of a local retirement home on Monday.

All residents and staff of the Chartwell Carrington House made it out safely, a spokesperson for the seniors’ housing operator said in an emailed statement.

First responders were called to the retirement residence located on the south side of Seventh Avenue sometime Monday evening, RCMP said in a news release issued just after 7:30 p.m. PT.

Police said residents were taken to the Mission Leisure Centre, where paramedics provided assessments and medical care to those who needed it.

Emergency support services were also on scene to help evacuees.

Mary Perrone Lisi, senior communications director at Chartwell, said residents have been temporarily relocated while the situation is assessed.

Some residents have gone to stay with their family members and others have been accommodated at nearby Chartwell residences and local hotels, according to Perrone Lisi.

“We are deeply grateful for the swift response of emergency services and for the outpouring of support from the community,” she said.

Police advised drivers to avoid Seventh Avenue between Cedar Street and Briskham Street Monday night, saying the stretch may be closed overnight.

RCMP said further updates on the fire would be provided on Tuesday.
