Michigan holds off UConn to win national championship
The 2025-26 Michigan Wolverines did something not even the Fab Five of days old could do: win a national title.
The Wolverines outlasted the UConn Huskies 69-63 on Monday in the men’s national title game in Indianapolis, cutting down the nets for the first time in over 30 years.
It was anything but pretty for the usually efficient Wolverines, as they hit their first three-pointer with 13 minutes left in the second half, building an 11-point lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the outing. They were previously 0-for-10 to start the game.
Ironically, their only other three-pointer made on the night may have been the most important shot of the game, as Trey McKenney sank a look from the wing with 1:52 left to build his team’s lead back up to nine and kill UConn’s momentum.
Elliot Cadeau was the star of the show for Michigan, as the diminutive guard scored 19 points, nailed that first triple and had two steals.
All-American forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who has been the best player for the Wolverines this season, started slow but managed to finish with 13 points in what could be his final collegiate game.
On the other side, senior and two-time champion Alex Karaban led the way for UConn, scoring 17 points, but his ineffectiveness from the field was the story for the Huskies as a whole.
Had his Huskies won, Karaban could’ve become the first player to win three national titles since Larry Hollyfield did so with the UCLA Bruins back in 1973.
Instead, Michigan is back on top of the college basketball world for the first time since 1989, when Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson cut down the nets after beating Seton Hall.
