Guelph’s mayor Cam Guthrie says he will not run again in this fall’s municipal election, bringing an end to more than a decade in the city’s top job.

Guthrie made the announcement Monday, saying he plans to “step aside and pass the baton” after serving three terms as mayor.

“Serving in this role has been an honour and a joy, which made this decision incredibly difficult,” Guthrie said in a written statement. “Yet I am also at peace with it.”

Guthrie said he chose to make the announcement ahead of the October vote to allow time for candidates to prepare and to help ensure a “smooth transition” at city hall.

“Important files and initiatives continue even during an election, and I want to help steer them to completion while working collaboratively with whoever is elected,” he said.

Before becoming mayor, Guthrie was elected to city council in 2010. He was first elected mayor in 2014 and went on to win two more terms.

In his statement, Guthrie pointed to several accomplishments during his time in office, including improving relationships with other levels of government, expanding supportive housing and encouraging economic growth.

He also highlighted community moments he said stood out, such as the return of the Market Square Christmas tree lighting, the celebration of the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 championship and the opening of the Veterans Crosswalk.

While Guthrie said his future plans are not “fully clear,” he vowed to remain completely dedicated for the rest of his term, focusing on public safety, housing and managing taxpayer dollars.

“I will stay fully engaged for the remaining months of my term, leading with the same energy and enthusiasm I’ve always brought to this role,” he said. “Thank you, Guelph. I feel truly blessed every single day to have served you.”
