Greenwood ‘likes idea’ of transfer that would provide Man Utd with huge windfall
Mason Greenwood’s future has been the subject of speculation heading into the summer transfer window, and a transfer could see Manchester United benefit financially

Mason Greenwood would reportedly be open to returning to Spain to continue his career, with interest in the forward continuing to grow. Any move would likely benefit Manchester United, who inserted a significant sell‑on clause when he left Old Trafford for Marseille in 2024, entitling them to a major share of any future transfer fee.
Atletico Madrid have been suggested as an interested party as they search for a potential replacement for Julian Alvarez, whose future at the Wanda Metropolitano remains uncertain. The Argentine has been linked with a move to Barcelona and has not confirmed whether he will stay at Atleti next season.
“Maybe yes, maybe no – you never know,” he said.
Speaking on Spanish radio network Cadena Ser, reporter Gonzalo Alvarez claimed that Greenwood is ‘liked’ by the Atletico board and that the player would welcome a return to Madrid. The 24‑year‑old previously lived in the Spanish capital during his loan spell with Getafe in the 2023/24 season.
Alvarez told Cadena Ser: “He lived in Madrid two years ago. He’s delighted. He loves Madrid.
“He made some good friends there. He likes the idea of returning, although he also has the option of going back home, which is Manchester United.

“We’ll see what happens but sources in Marseille tell me that the possibility of Greenwood joining Atletico Madrid is real.”
Meanwhile, reports in Italy suggest Juventus have registered an interest, though meeting Marseille’s reported £42million valuation could prove challenging.
However, the strong relationship between the two clubs is said to have opened the door to a potential creative solution involving player swaps.
Names such as Jonathan David and Edon Zhegrova have been mentioned as possible makeweights to reduce the overall fee.
A swap deal with Juventus, though, would be less financially advantageous for United, who are keen to maximise any funds they can recoup ahead of the summer window.
If a transfer were to materialise, United could receive between 40 and 50 per cent of the fee through the widely reported sell‑on clause.
The 24‑year‑old left Old Trafford in a £26.6million deal to join Marseille in July 2024.
