Marathon beginner guide: Best weapons and loadout

The Marathon Server Slam is currently live, and you may wonder which weapon is the best in the game. Since the game is new and there is a massive arsenal to look into, you may feel overwhelmed by the loadout system, the types of weapons available, and exactly how you can acquire them.

Marathon is a PvPvE survival extraction FPS game where you drop into Tau Ceti as a Runner and need to “scavenge the ruins of a long-lost human colony”. You will encounter various AI enemies along with other real players. To successfully navigate these threats, you need a powerful weapon to overcome the obstacles.

This article will provide the basic beginner information you need to know regarding which weapon is the absolute best, all the available weapons, and exactly how the loadout system works.

Best weapons to use in Marathon: Beginner’s guide

Marathon Server Slam has just gone live, and limited access is given to the game’s overall content. However, in this final preview, all launch weapons are fully accessible.

Currently, due to the limited time, it would not be fair to definitively point out which weapons are the absolute best. But personally, from what I have played so far, I found the M77 Assault Rifle, Bully SMG, and the V75 Scar AR to be great choices in terms of damage, control, and range, especially for PvP combat.

We will update this article once we have acquired more information and will provide a comprehensive list of the best weapons you can use in the game.

Currently, there are 28 weapons available, divided across eight different categories.

Here are the weapons based on each category:

Each weapon uses different ammunition, and there are five types of ammos available: Light Bullets, Volt Batteries, Heavy Rounds, Volt Cells, and Mips Rounds. You can purchase bullets directly from the Armory or even find them by looting during a match. Just note that whichever weapon you choose to equip, it will clearly show exactly what type of bullet it requires.

Marathon loadout guide

In Marathon, each weapon will have three or four attachment options. Here, attachments are termed as Mods. You can buy Mods from the Armory using Credits, but do keep in mind that the Armory will have limited options. You need to wait until the Armory refreshes to get new options again. A great way to acquire attachments is by looting containers or combatants in the game.

There are different mods available, such as the Magazine Mod, Barrel Mod, and more. The most common one present on every weapon is the Chip Mod, which directly enhances your weapon’s overall capabilities.

So, the best loadout for a weapon is to find the specific Mods for it. For example, the M77 Assault Rifle has three Mod slots: a Chip Mod, a Grip Mod, and a Magazine Mod.

The more you play, the more Mods you will find, which will eventually make your weapon even more effective. Just equip the weapon, play the match, and whenever you find a Mod, you can equip it directly to your weapon.
