Marcus Rashford status changed as Man United loanee suffers injury setback

Manchester United have announced a major change concerning Marcus Rashford that may hint at a shift in perceptions regarding how he’s viewed by those at Old Trafford

Despite any existing friction between Manchester United and Marcus Rashford, the Premier League heavyweights clearly hold their player in high regard. Rashford has experienced a resurgence while on loan at Barcelona this season and could make his move to the Spanish giants permanent in the summer.

However, United have made a bold move by bestowing a new title upon the player mid-season. This could potentially stir up controversy among some supporters given his standing with the club at the time of his departure.

In other news, United have been dealt a blow with the news that another academy graduate could be facing a stint on the sidelines due to a “quite serious” injury. The MEN delves into all the latest happenings at Old Trafford ahead of Monday’s trip to Wolverhampton.

Rashford’s honoured by United

There was a point when Rashford seemed a cert for legendary status at Old Trafford after he first broke into the first team in early 2016. Much has happened over the past decade, and his bond with the club seemed to break when he first went on loan to Aston Villa nearly a year ago.

The relationship became even more complex when his loan to Barca, complete with an affordable purchase option, was confirmed in the summer. However, United have demonstrated their spirit by listing Rashford under the ‘Legends’ section on their official website.

The 28-year-old enters elite territory, joining the ranks of Sir Bobby Charlton, Roy Keane, Bryan Robson, Wayne Rooney and Denis Irwin in that exclusive group. The move reflects how United view the player, regardless of recent events.

It had been claimed Rashford’s rapport with manager Ruben Amorim deteriorated at some stage as his fortunes in England declined. Yet while he may not currently be performing at his peak for United, it evidently hasn’t overshadowed his considerable achievements while wearing the famous red.

Before departing on loan, Rashford contributed to the club winning two FA Cups, a Europa League trophy and two League Cups. Whilst others in the Legends category may have triumphed during more successful periods, Rashford is still acknowledged for playing a crucial role in keeping the club competitive during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson years.

Toby Collyer suffers ‘quite a big’ injury

It may not be the Camp Nou, but United youngster Toby Collyer had demonstrated genuine potential on loan at the Hawthorns this campaign. The 21-year-old moved to West Brom during the summer, with the intention of accumulating vital game time before returning to Old Trafford next season.

Unfortunately, Collyer has made his way back to Manchester earlier than anticipated following an injury Baggies manager Ryan Mason described as “quite a big” one. This now casts doubt over his remaining time with the Championship outfit.

“It’s quite a big injury,” Mason told BBC Radio WM. “He’s at United at the minute where they’re assessing him and then in the coming weeks we’ll decide his plan regarding his rehab.

“We’ve got him on loan for the season and normally any loan player that gets an injury that’s a bit more than a small one, more a significant one, it’s only right for the parent club to look at them, check them over, and we’re in dialogue and hopefully he can do his rehab and come back better.”

Collyer has featured 13 times for United’s senior side and was regarded as someone with the capability to secure a position under Amorim’s management. He’s made 12 appearances for West Brom thus far and had a short stint in the starting XI back in October.
