What £60m Morgan Gibbs-White transfer would mean for Man United

Manchester United have been credited with an interest in signing Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White

Manchester United are being linked with a move for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White ahead of the summer transfer window. There are still almost four months before United are able to go into the market for reinforcements, but it seems that Gibbs-White may be a target.

A report in the Daily Mail has claimed that United are “monitoring” Gibbs-White with a view to potentially making an offer during the summer transfer window.

It has been claimed in the report that United also have an interest in Gibbs-White’s teammate at Forest, Elliot Anderson, with both players also said to be attracting interest from Manchester City.

There is no indication at this stage of how likely or not United may be to sign Gibbs-White, or if the reported interest turns out to be genuine.

It was only last summer that Gibbs-White seemed destined to complete a £60 million move to Tottenham Hotspur, only for the deal to fall through and for the 26-year-old to sign a new contract to extend his stay at the City Ground instead.

If United were to sign Gibbs-White, it would certainly strengthen their forward options and give another dimension to the forward line for the new manager ahead of next season.

Gibbs-White currently plays as an attacking midfielder for Forest, but is also capable of being used on the wing when necessary.

This versatility would certainly come in handy for United next season, especially if the club has European football to manage alongside Premier League and domestic cup competitions.

What the signing of Gibbs-White for United could mean, though, is uncertainty around Bruno Fernandes’ future. If Gibbs-White plays as a No.10, it would leave Fernandes being forced to either drop to the bench or play in a deeper role in midfield to accommodate the England international.

This could be particularly useful for United, with Casemiro already confirmed to be leaving the club when his contract expires in the summer. As a result, this has already seen the club linked with a host of midfielders as potential replacements.

In that scenario, United could then have Bryan Mbeumo start on the right wing and Benjamin Sesko in the centre forward role, while Matheus Cunha could be used on the left wing if necessary.

United would then have Amad Diallo, Patrick Dorgu and Joshua Zirkzee as options from the bench as options to make changes to the forward line if required.
