Man United’s true cost of Ruben Amorim sack laid bare as £37m experiment bombs

Manchester United finally decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim last month after a difficult spell at Old Trafford, with Michael Carrick taking interim charge until the end of the season

Manchester United’s decision to appoint and then sack Ruben Amorim could ultimately cost the club more than £37million.

United finally parted company with Amorim last month, as the call to sack the Portuguese head coach saw his 14-month spell in charge at Old Trafford come to an end.

United turned to Darren Fletcher on a temporary basis following Amorim’s exit, with Michael Carrick going on to be appointed as the club’s interim head coach until the end of the season.

Amorim’s final match in charge of United was a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League, a result which left them in sixth place in the table and facing an uphill task to qualify for the Champions League.

Since Carrick has taken charge, the interim head coach has won five of his six games at the helm and has guided the Reds to fourth place in the table and above rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.

However, it seems that United’s decision to sack Amorim earlier this year could cost them a large sum of money.

United released their latest financial information to the New York Stock Exchange, which included the how much it cost to sack Amorim and his backroom staff earlier this year.

In total, United could need to pay £15.9million to Amorim and his coaching staff after their exit from Old Trafford earlier this year.

United needed to pay around £11million to appoint Amorim in the first instance, with the compensation package paid to his former club, Sporting CP.

On top of that, United confirmed they paid £10.4million to sack their former manager, Erik ten Hag, back in October 2024.

As a result, United’s total pay-outs in their overall decision to move on from Ten Hag before appointing and then later parting ways with Amorim could end up costing the club a total of £37.3million, showing how the experiment well and truly failed.

It remains to be seen who United will decide to name as their permanent boss from the summer, with a host of names already being linked with the job. Should Carrick continue to impress, then he could well be in the mix.

United’s next match will see them face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, where Carrick and Co will be determined to claim all three points in their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
