Man United to profit as Marseille forced into Mason Greenwood transfer decision

Mason Greenwood continues to impress two years after completiing a transfer away from Old Trafford.

Manchester United could be set to profit from Juventus after they reportedly reignited their interest in Mason Greenwood. The forward is currently playing for Ligue 1 club Marseille and continues to impress in France.

The 24-year-old has scored 25 times in 38 appearances in all competitions for Marseille this season. That has already beaten his total of 22 goals in all competitions last season, prompting more speculation over his future.

Gazzetta dello Sport report that Juventus are stepping up their interest in United academy graduate Greenwood. The Italian giants are reported to have initially shown interest two years ago when he was with United.

It’s claimed that failure to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season will result in the forward being ‘sacrificed’ by the French club. However, it is said that he will still cost at least €50 million (£43m), which would be lower than the player’s ‘true value’.

Greenwood joined Marseille from United in the summer of 2024 for a fee of around £26.7 million. United also included a substantial sell-on fee in the agreement, which will see them earn 40 per cent of either a full fee or profit made by Marseille, depending on the clause.

Even if it is a percentage of the profit, a £43 million sale this summer would earn United a windfall of £6.5 million.

Marseille currently sit in the final Champions League position in Ligue 1, but are just two points ahead of fourth-placed Lyon. Therefore, qualification for the competition is far from guaranteed.

As well as Juventus, other clubs have been linked with an interest in Greenwood ahead of the summer transfer window, including clubs in Saudi Arabia. It has, however, been claimed that tensions in the Middle East are expected to make any deal less likely.

Previous reports have also touched on Juventus’ interest in Greenwood. But it’s claimed that the club could look to try and reduce the price by including Jonathan David or Edon Zhegrova in the deal.

Should that be the case, any money received by United upon completion of the transfer would be reduced.

Marseille and Greenwood are back in action on Sunday when they face Lille in Ligue 1 (4.15pm kick-off). They go into the game, having won their last two league games 1-0.
