Rashford ‘open to Man United return’, new transfer valuation, replacement twist

Marcus Rashford has got his career back on track but where he’ll be playing next season remains up in the air

Nearing 18 months since Marcus Rashford’s last Manchester United appearance, his relationship with the club remains intact – at least contractually.

The England star has enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Barcelona with 10 goals and 13 assists in 39 games across all competitions. Having already won the Spanish Super Cup, the La Liga champions are on course to retain their title and are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Rashford hasn’t shied away from admitting his desire to remain in Catalonia for the long haul, but whether United and Barca can come to an agreement over his uncertain future is another matter.

Potential United return

The 28-year-old hasn’t played for United since December 2024 when appearing in their 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. Admitting he was ready for a new challenge while still a United player, it did seem that once he left the club, a return to Old Trafford would likely be improbable.

However, with speculation suggesting Barcelona could look to renegotiate the terms of his £26million buy option, United bosses are reportedly holding firm on the price tag and would even allow for Rashford’s return if the option isn’t triggered.

According to ESPN, Rashford would prefer to remain at Barcelona but hasn’t yet closed the door on a stunning return to Manchester. A reintegration back into the first team is still considered an unlikely scenario with the club targeting a left winger in the summer transfer window.

New transfer valuation

Despite reports of Barcelona aiming to negotiate down the £26m purchase option, top figures at United believe their academy graduate’s value has skyrocketed since his move abroad.

Thanks to his return to form, especially on the European stage, Mirror Football reported how United officials place Rashford’s price tag nearer to £50m, with numerous clubs showing interest in signing him this summer.

Given the staggering difference in both clubs’ value of the winger, it remains to be seen whether they could come to an agreement on the price, but the Catalan giants could hold an advantage given Rashford has already admitted his desire to continue his career at the Camp Nou.

Replacement options

With Rashford’s future currently up in the air, Spanish news outlet Marca has reported that Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is evaluating possible alternatives to signing the Englishman on a permanent deal this summer and replacing him in the squad.

Should Rashford not secure a long-term move to the Catalan giants at the end of the season, one such player reportedly identified as his replacement is Benfica star Andreas Schjelderup. The 21-year-old has scored seven goals this season and went as far as to publicly express his delight in being linked to the club.

Addressing the rumours, the left winger said in a recent interview with Norwegian TV channel TV2: “The truth is I didn’t know anything about this, but if it were true, it would be fantastic.”

With Barcelona essentially being given the green light by Schjelderup, they certainly have a big decision to weigh up. A seven-year age difference to Rashford could prove to be crucial.
