A man who died after a double shooting in Winnipeg’s North End last week has been identified by police, who also said a youth who was killed was 16.
Jason Robert Baker, 32, a member of Hollow Water First Nation, was rushed to hospital in critical condition around 5:30 p.m. on March 12.
The teen, from Sagkeeng First Nation, was also critically injured and sent to hospital. His name is not being released because of his age.
Both victims were pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
The shootings happened at a home on Boyd Avenue, between Charles and Salter streets.
No arrests have been made.
There have been nine homicides so far this year, and nearly half are the result of firearms, said police Chief Gene Bowers. At least four have been confirmed as shooting deaths, while the cause of two remains undetermined.
Last year at this time, there were six homicides and none were related to shootings.
“We do seize a lot of firearms over the years, and the majority of those firearms, I can say, are from the United States,” Bowers said.
Police have also targeted the makers of 3D-printed guns, which have been showing up more as that technology improves.
Bowers said the homicide rate is higher than last year but not unusually high.
“It’s not exceedingly way over that number,” he said.
In 2024, there were 12 homicides as of March 19, he said.
“It ebbs and it flows,” Bowers said. “Any homicide is super tragic, and if we could avoid them, any homicide, that would be great. But again, I’m not overly concerned right now.”
Of the 12 in 2024, four were shootings. The year ended with a total of 41 homicides, nine of which were confirmed as shootings.
