Crown lawyers dropped second-degree murder charges against two Inuvik women Wednesday, but they will stand trial at a later date for manslaughter.

In 2024, RCMP in Inuvik, N.W.T., charged the pair in connection with the death of a 39-year-old man.

Annabelle Edwards and Felicia Elanik, both from Inuvik, were charged at the time with second-degree murder and performing an indignity to human remains.

After the decision in court Wednesday, they will stand trial on the lesser charge of manslaughter and the indignity to human remains.

RCMP did not release the name of the man who died. There is also a publication ban on evidence from the preliminary inquiry.
