Grantchester star announced for new BBC crime drama ahead final ITV series

The eight-part series is set to begin production this spring in the North East.

There’s good news for fans of Grantchester as they’re set to see Robson Green in another crime drama.

The actor, who plays Detective Inspector Geordie Keating in the ITV period drama, will take on the role of Joe Ruby in the forthcoming eight-part series, The Northumbria Mysteries.

Centring on an unlikely crime-solving partnership, the BBC programme will be set against the sweeping Northumberland coastline and its surrounding market towns.

Characterised as a ‘jack-of-all-trades’, Joe’s life has been moulded by missed opportunities, mistakes and regrets, according to Radio Times.

Meanwhile, Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell is the polar opposite of Joe, portrayed as a deep thinker with a brilliant mind and an ice-cool disposition.

However, it has not yet been announced who will take on the role of Rose, reports Chronicle Live.

A brief synopsis for the series reads: “In a classic odd-couple pairing, Joe and Rose combine their talents as they frustrate, confound, and ultimately surprise one another while unravelling a series of compelling crime mysteries.”

It’s believed the forthcoming drama will commence production this spring and will be produced by Lonesome Pine Productions.

Speaking about The Northumbria Mysteries, Lesley Douglas, the executive producer and co-founder of Lonesome Pine Productions, shared their excitement.

They expressed: “We could not be happier to have Robson Green lead the cast and bring Joe Ruby to life, within the magnificent backdrop of Northumberland. Working with the BBC to realise these characters has been a labour of love.”

Lonesome Pine Productions shared the news on Instagram, revealing that the series will be directed by Gordon Anderson and Duncan Foster, and produced by Lesley Douglas.

The announcement quickly garnered responses, with many expressing their anticipation. One person exclaimed: “Amazing work.”

Another individual commented: “Ahhh, such great news for @director_duncan as well” While another penned: “This is what we love to see, Lesley.”

This follows earlier reports this year that Robson Green will return as Patrick Harbottle for a second season of the Channel 5 thriller, The Game.

Starring Jason Watkins, the gripping show was labelled a ‘cat and mouse thriller’ as police detective, Huw Miller (played by Jason Watkins), was haunted by an unresolved case in his town.

When his new neighbour, Patrick Harbottle (Robson Green), eerily repeats a phrase once uttered by the mystery stalker who terrorised his town years ago, events take a sinister turn.

The air date for The Northumbria Mysteries has yet to be confirmed.
