Visits have been suspended at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener as the facility is currently in lockdown.

Correctional Service Canada issued a brief statement on Monday saying the lockdown started on Sunday “to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.”

“Visits have been suspended until the lockdown is ended. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so,” the lockdown notice said.

In response to questions from CBC K-W, Correctional Service Canada spokesperson Kerry Gatien said in an email the lockdown was “implemented to resolve a security-related workplace health and safety issue.”

Gatien said there is no timeline for when normal operations at the prison will resume.
