From England To NYC: Red Fox Stows Away On Cargo Ship Across The Atlantic – World Animal News
A wild traveler has arrived in New York City after an extraordinary and unplanned journey across the Atlantic.
A young male red fox was discovered aboard a cargo ship arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey after the vessel completed its voyage from Southampton, England. The fox, estimated to be about two years old and weighing roughly 11 pounds, somehow managed to board the massive vehicle carrier before it left port earlier in February.
The ship departed England on February 4 carrying vehicles bound for the United States. As the vessel approached New York Harbor, crew members spotted the unexpected passenger hiding among the cargo.
When the vessel reached New York Harbor on February 18, authorities were notified, and the fox was safely taken in by wildlife officials.
Coordinated efforts between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and wildlife specialists ensured the fox received proper care. The following day, the fox was transferred to the Bronx Zoo, where veterinarians conducted a thorough health examination.
Remarkably, the fox appeared to be in good health and remained alert despite the long voyage across the Atlantic.
Exactly how the fox managed to sneak aboard the ship remains unclear. Busy port environments often attract wildlife searching for food or shelter, and the animal may have slipped into the vessel unnoticed while it was docked in England.
For now, the fox will remain under the supervision of animal care experts while officials assess the best long-term option for the adventurous stowaway.
While cargo ships routinely cross the Atlantic carrying thousands of vehicles and shipping containers, it is rare for a wild animal to complete the journey alongside them, making this fox one of the most unique passengers to arrive in New York Harbor.
